Illustrated frontispiece being a reproduction of " Shooting Plover " by Francis Barlow. The text is illustrated with numerous coloured and black-and-white illustrations of famous not so famous sporting paintings from England. Orange coloured boards with gilt writing on the spine. Bumping to the head and to the heel of the spine and there is shelf wear to the lower book edges. Very very light browning to the endpapers and internal pages. Dust marks to the paper edges along with some light browning. Illustrated dustwrapper showing to scenes hunting on horses and on the back panel shooting with dogs with black background and yellow writing on the front panel and spine. The dustwrapper is rubbed and somewhat faded. Rubbing and very slight chipping to the dustwrapper corners and to the head and to the heel of the spine. The fold over panels have become quite yellow. his book was first published in 1922 and it follows the most talented of British sporting artists from the 17th century to the late Victorian times. Bound in original cream linen covered boards with gilt lettering on upper cover and spine. Spine sunned. No ownership marks present. Boards have wear present to the extremities boards lightly soiled. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. "This book contains the largest and most varied collection of reproductions from Henry Alken's original drawings and paintings which has ever been published together with several of the best examples of contemporary engravings from the same artist." the Publisher. Henry Thomas Alken 1785-1851 was a noted English sporting artist. He trained horses for the Duke of Beaufort ". Before studying under J. T. Barker Beaumont the miniaturist and he exhibited miniatures at the Royal Academy in 1801-02. He moved to Melton Mowbray in 1810 to train horses and eke out a livelihood in decorating trays with hunting scenes. His success really began when he issued prints under the name of Ben Tally Ho in 1813 and he was at his most prolific in the 1820s and 1830s.
