Robert Lowell "Robin" Moore Jr. October 31 1925 - February 21 2008 was an American writer most known for his books The Green Berets The French Connection: A True Account of Cops Narcotics and International Conspiracy and with Xaviera Hollander and Yvonne Dunleavy The Happy Hooker: My Own Story. Moore also co-authored the lyrics for the "Ballad of the Green Berets" which was one of the major hit songs of 1966. The song was also featured in the 1968 film The Green Berets based on Moore's book which starred John Wayne. His last book Wars of the Green Berets co-authored with Col. Mike 'Doc' Lennon was released in June 2007. At the time of his death Moore was residing in Hopkinsville Kentucky home to Fort Campbell and the 5th Special Forces Group where he was working on his memoirs as well as three other books. Derived from a Kirkus review: Big in scope Moore's new novel is both more complex and more fictional than his The Green Berets. The Special Forces are back again but this time they are only part of a much larger U.S. team operating in the Southeast Asian country called ""Mituyan."" Ostensibly the team is there to keep the ruling faction in power; however the anti-Communist rulers are so corrupt and fascistic that even the President and Secretary of Defense see the need for a coup by a rival anti-Communist faction. Meanwhile the U.S. team of coordinators and experts is pulling futilely in every direction at once. Seldom has U.S. political blundering been so keenly exposed. Our stupidity is so convincingly detailed as to leave the reader disillusioned forever regarding U.S. meddling in Asia. To be sure the men in the field the advisors entering the fight generally seem to know what they're doing although their goals constantly change. Moore's characters are the stock properties of political novels and there's more than a touch of Hollywood in the plotting and romances.
