This volume covers seagulls and ducks among others. With volume listing; black and white frontispiece portrait of Wilson; black and white vignette title page of seagulls; 2 further title pages; publisher's advert; contents listing; Memoir of Alexander Wilson; text with black and white illustrations; directions for the binder; and 31 hand coloured plates. A set of title pages for the entire series is also bound in. This was done in case subscribers wanted to rebind their sets using title pages with the same date - 1843. The binding is in very good condition with light sunning and a small mark to the spine and very light wear to boards. Corners and edges have light wear. The original green endpapers are present and are unmarked. The contents are clean with light toning to the text pages. The gather at p307 has slightly loose stitching. Edinburgh: W H Lizars A very good copy of a scarce title from the Naturalist's Library in the original decorative cloth binding with black and white frontispiece hand-coloured vignette title page and 30 further hand coloured plates. This copy is undated but is the Lizars 'Popular Edition' circa 1845. Advances in printing meant that the Naturalists' Library could be reissued at less cost so this edition retains the plates and text from the first. The red cloth binding has gilt decoration and blind stamped design to the front board and gilt decoration and titles to the spine. It has been rebacked and the cloth polished at the same time so it is very bright and clean. There is light corner wear. The original endpapers have been retained with reinforcement at the joint in cloth matching the boards. There is a pencil signature to the fep. Contents: frontispiece with tissue guard; hand coloured vignette title; title; contents list; memoir; and text 277 pp with 30 hand coloured plates. In Vol III plate 13 has slight loss to one edge. In Vol IV the plate paper is lightly toned and in some plates the rough edge between plates on the original plate paper is showing. There is no plate numbered 28 but there are 2 different versions of plate 29. The text pages are very brown-toned particularly at the top and side margin. The odd corner has been turned over. The plate paper is also toned although less than the text. There is some marking around the margins of plates. Plate 21 has an old crease at the top corner. The contents are generally clean but the stitching is beginning to fail so the book is currently sound but some sections are wobbly and it will require repair at some point. There is no tissue-guard between the frontispiece and the vignette title page so there is some spotting to both.
