The bird illustrators deserve special note. Robert Ridgway (1850-1929) was one America's leading ornithologists. At the age of 17, he was appointed zoologist on a geological survey of the 40th parallel. From 1874 until his death, he served as ornithologist and curator of the Smithsonian Institute. Ridgway established a system of color standards and nomenclature that is still used today. Robert's younger brother John was chief illustrator for United States Geological Survey and an artist for the California Institute of Technology and Carnegie Institution of Washington. J.; Restall Robin L.; Orford Anthony; Heinzel H. Very Good. Hardcover. First Edition. 8vo. An inclusive 65-year run from February 1934 to 1998 bound in 26 volumes. Volumes for 1934-1961 bound in original cloth the remainder in attractive half dark-green morocco. Most volumes have the original wrappers bound in but excluding the first few years. Dozens of colour plates of exotic birds many of which commissioned specialy for Foreign Birds and by well-known artists including Neville Cayley R. A. Vowles Lawrence and Heinzel but it is Vowells who has made the greatest contribution many of his plates outstanding. Generally in very good condition some of the earlier cloth bindings are slightly worn but remain strong contents clean and tight no inscriptions. An impressive and attractively bound run of this important avicultural magazine only missing the 1933 issues: runs as comprehensive as this are rarely offered.
