Nel 1731, dopo anni di collezionismo, Seba commissionò l'illustrazione accurata e spesso articolata di ogni suo esemplare e utilizzò questi meticolosi disegni per la pubblicazione di un catalogo in quattro volumi, che conteneva la sua intera collezione: dalle piante esotiche a serpenti, rane e coccodrilli, dalle conchiglie ai coralli, dagli uccelli alle farfalle, fino a includere creature oggi estinte.
