‎TALES FROM SHAKESPEARE: DESIGNED FOR THE USE OF YOUNG PEOPLE. TWO VOLUMES‎

‎London: Thomas Hodgkins At The Juvenile Press 1807. Two Volumes. 12mos beautiful gilt-worked red full-morocco leather bindings by Riviere & Sons. First edition earliest printing. These 20 tales are illustrated with 20 engraved illustrations by William Mulready. First edition first impression with the imprint of the printer T. Davison on the verso of p. 235 vol. I and with the Hanway Street address in the final advertisements. The "Tales" are the work of Lamb and his sister Mary who had severe bouts of mental illness. Charles wrote the tragedies and Mary wrote the comedies. The book is designed to make the stories of Shakespeare's plays familiar to the young. According to the Cambridge History of English Literature "the first book which appealing to a general audience and to a rising generation made Shakespeare a familiar and popular author." Originally the "Tales" were to be anonymous but Godwin the publisher persuaded an unreluctant Charles to have his name on the title page. Mary did not get her name on the title page until the seventh edition in 1838. "Tales from Shakespeare" has been republished many times in various editions and using various illustrators including Arthur Rackham. Very Good covers nice some scattered foxing; rubbing & abrasions to front pastedowns from bookplates formerly removed.

Thomas Hodgkins At The Juvenile Press hardcover books‎

‎New York and Boston: The Lamb Publishing Company and C. T. Brainard Publishing Co. 1900 Two volumes. Deluxe edition limited issue of 1000 copies printed for subscribers this set being out of series and unnumbered. Finely bound by Brentano's in three-quarter contemporary-style dark blue morocco ruled in gilt and light blue cloth five raised bands to spine stamped in gilt to spine pale gray endpapers top edges gilt. A very good set spines faded to brown and with some light rubbing to hinges cloth rippling to front board of volume I a touch of offsetting to endpapers. Widely acknowledged as being essential to the understanding of Charles Lamb's writings the author's letters to other literary figures of his time shed light on his own work and Romantic literature. Written between 1796 and 1826 the recipients of the letters include Samuel Taylor Coleridge Robert Southey and William Wordsworth. Interestingly when his letters were first published they were heavily edited because many of them referred to the ongoing mental health struggles that his sister Mary also an author was experiencing. It was not until after her death that the letters could be published in their original uncensored form. Hard Cover. Very Good. New York and Boston: The Lamb Publishing Company and C. T. ‎Lamb Charles & Mary‎

‎The Adventures of Ulysses; to Which is Added Mrs. Leicester's School; or the History of Several Young Ladies Related By Themselves‎

‎London: Bradbury & Evans for Edward Moxon 1840. Octavo. 4 71. Printed in double columns. They first gained success as their "Tales of Shakespeare" were issued in the first quarter of the 19th century. When Charles Lamb 1775-1834 and his unfortunate sister Mary 1764-1847 moved from one undesirable lodging to another William Godwin suggested they contribute to his "Juvenile Library". Their first work was the Tales of Shakespeare with Charles doing the tragedies and Mary taking the comedies. Then they came across the philosophy of Mrs. Leicester's School which counter the patronizing morality of most children's writers and finding a reality of children's lives even when they faced hardships and unfair suffering. They prepared; The Adventures of Ulysses which became one of the favorites for small children. Edward Moxon 1808-1858 desired to publish them and Mary wrote seven of the stories with children having written three. The seven girls whose stories are told are: Elizabeth Villiers Louisa Manners Ann Withers Elinoir Forester Margaret Green Emily Barton Maria Howe Charlotte Wilmot Susan Yates and Arabella Hardy. Those with an asterisks are by Charles Lamb the others are by Mary. Since Mary was often deeply emotionally troubled the stories she wrote caused her deep emotional pain. The 1840 was the nicest edition of the Ulysses tradition by Moxon. Moxon was called the dedicated publisher of the poets from Wordsworth Leigh Hunt and to Tennyson. Bound in a contemporary cloth backed boards with original morocco label on spine only light wear to spine ends and corners. A very nice copy. Bradbury & Evans for Edward Moxon unknown books‎
