First Edition first printing of the first volume of her celebrated 'Lark Rise to Candleford' trilogy. 8vo. 288pp. Brown cloth lettered and ruled in gold at the spine. Top edge lightly dust soiled and with just a touch of spotting to the fore edge occasionally encroaching just a fraction to the leaf margins and to the free endpapers. A little light partial browning to the half-title and final text leaf but a lovely crisp copy thereafter. Former owner name and date inked to the head of the front free endpaper. Very good in a somewhat distressed example of the uncommon dust wrapper featuring two further Lamb drawings which do not appear in the text. The wrapper is price-clipped and chipped with two one-inch sized portions of loss to the top edge two further small areas of edge-loss and a little dust soiling and chafing several tiny closed tears and several small areas of surface abrasion. Au premier plan, de gche à dte : Thiers en Mercure volant, un petit putto aux yeux bandés représentant le Juste-Milieu tenant un carquois contenant les « TRAITS LOURDS » des journaux favorables au gouvernement (« MONITE […] [MONITEUR] », « NOUVELL […] [NOUVELLISTE] », « [JOURNAL DES] DÉBATS »), une Vénus entourée de sacs d’or, de décorations (épaulettes, croix d’honneur, écharpes…). Elle tient, de plus, sur ses genoux, de petites statuettes (Némésis et sans doute le Figaro, c'est-à-dire les deux journaux naguère d’opposition, et servant ensuite le gouvernement, lequel a acheté leur silence avec de l’argent). Le baron Louis, dans l’ombre, représente l’Avarice, posant ses pieds crochus sur un sac d’or. Au deuxième plan, de gche à dte : Talleyrand en Vulcain, forgeant des chaînes et des protocoles (« PROTOCOLE // N°73050 », « BELGIQUE », « « ANGLETE […] [ANGLETERRE] », « PROTOC […] // N°74051 »), des serments (« SERMENS [SERMENTS] // de // 93 à 1832 »), l’histoire de la « révol [révolution] », Cerbère gardant les prisons de « Ste PELAGIE », de « LA FORCE » (chien à trois têtes couvertes de casquettes de police). La Discorde tenant non une pomme, mais une poire, et la Cupidité tenant un registre d’ « AGIOT » au-dessus du temple de la Bourse. Au troisième plan, de gche à dte : d’Argout en statue de Pan en terme (avec une palette et des pinceaux à la base), les furies : Persil avec ses « saisies » et « condamnation », Guizot et sa guizotine (la troisième furie n’est pas identifiée). Soult en Mars brandit un cierge, une figure ( ?) tient une fourche tordue et une clé de cachot. Barthe en Thémis tient un double glaive et une balance, Girod de l’Ain en Bacchus, Lobau en Neptune tenant la seringue à clystère se terminant en trident. Viennet en Apollon (ou Orphée ?) joue la « PHILIPPIDE » à la harpe, Montalivet, représentant la Flatterie, verse de l’ambroisie (sous forme de papiers avec les inscriptions : « TRES FIDELE SUJET // FLATTERIE ») dans la coupe de Louis-Philippe en Jupiter, accompagné de son coq foulant des armes, et coiffé d’une couronne en forme de poire. Derrière lui, la Paix avec son rameau, et la Frayeur avec son lièvre. Le duc d’Orléans en Hercule s’appuyant sur sa massue portant l’inscription « DISCOURS », Dupin en Momus, dieu de la Folie, ayant pour marotte une chaussure. Et enfin, Sébastiani, en paon (sans doute Junon). A l’arrière-plan, une figure volante représentant le journal le « MONITEUR », la Nuit, répandant des pavots, et un zodiaque qui sert à dénoncer les différents événements des derniers mois (« JUIN 1832 » avec une balance, « JUILLET 1832 » avec un lion, « AOUT 1832 » avec un scorpion, « SEPTEM […] [SEPTEMBRE 1832] »). Puis, un homme portant une faux : il s’agit de Saturne, emportant avec lui dans son sac la « MEILLEURE // REPUBLIQUE ». Ce dieu se retire aux Etats-Unis (La Fayette ?). Et enfin, un siège vide au centre : il s’agit de celui de la « Sagesse » (in explication).‎

Louis Philippe, represented as a fat, effeminate king wearing a toga, is accompanied by a decadent family and scheming, corrupt ministers. The composition is dominated by Talleyrand to the left who is portrayed as Vulcan, forging chains and protocols. He is sitting on netting with which he ensnares the world; a fleur-de-lys is tattooed on his right forearm; his orthopaedic shoe is on the correct foot and his crutch is partly buried under documents to his right.Print shows a group of French political figures as the "false gods of Olympus" each depicted with some attribute of the classical god they are portraying, among them are Georges Mouton as Neptune, Etienne-Denis Pasquier as flattery playing a lyre, Girod de l'Ain as Bacchus, a man as Themis, overhead is a female figure representing the "Moniteur", Marshall Soult as Mars, Félix Barthe as Cyclops, François Guizot as a Fury, Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord as Vulcan, comte d'Argout as Pan, Adolphe Thiers as Mercury, a blind putti with a quiver of arrows, Venus reclines among objects of wealth next to Joseph Dominique, H.F.B. Sébastiani as a peacock, Andre Dupin as Momus, wearing a fools cap, Ferdinand Philippe, duc d'Orleans as Hercules, and Louis-Philippe, the "citizen king" of the French, as Jupiter, seated with a rooster between his legs.
