FIRST EDITION SECOND ISSUE UNCUT IN THE ORIGINAL BOARDS. 1 vol. 7-13/16" x 5" with "13 Waterloo Place" on title-page with the half-title and 6pp. of ads bound in the original blue boards uncut with the original white paper spine and the original printed paper spine label priced "9s. 6d.". Internally generally clean and bright covers neatly rehinged inner hinges strengthened head and foot of spine rubbed with some loss. These essays first appeared in the London Magazine from 1820-23 and are largely autobiographical. They deal with mankind at large as seen through the medium of Lamb's own experiences and impressions. They are presented with exquisite humor and pathos and in a brilliant and inimitable style. Though he was much loved for his sweetness and humor Lamb's life was marked by frustration and tragedy. A stammer kept him from qualifying for a university position so he went to work as a clerk for the East India Co. where he remained until 1825. There was a strain of insanity in the family and Mary Lamb in a fit of madness killed their mother. First American editions and the true first complete edition of the second series of essays the second series wasn't published in England until 1833 as The Last Essays of Elia. Two volumes. 12mos. Linen and original printed glazed papercovered boards with paper spine labels. Each volume bears on the front pastedown the bookplate of James Fenimore Cooper Jr. grandson of the American author. Laid in are an old bookseller's description and a letter dated 1916 to Mrs. James Fenimore Cooper Jr. sending the books along and discussing some of the bibliographical niceties. Front joint professionally and neatly repaired and the spine label partly perished on First Series small stains on the boards chip on the unprinted front fly in Second Series. Still a nice set in the uncommon original boards in better condition than one might reasonably expect of these famous autobiographical essays and with an interesting association. In 1820 Lamb invented the pseudonym Elia for his first essay about the work place of his brother by taking the name of a clerk no longer employed there. The pseudonym stuck however and it allowed Lamb to develop a persona with which he examined a variety of subjects with his celebrated humor and style. Probably Lamb's best work though he is also remembered for his children's versions of Shakespeare and Homer which he wrote with his sister Mary who became his charge after her bout with insanity in 1796 when she killed their mother. Finely bound in full navy morocco with five raised bands to the spine decorative gilt stamping to the spine bands and compartments spine lettered in gilt boards ruled in gilt all edges gilt elaborate gilt turn-ins maroon coated endpapers. Very good or better with some light wear and rubbing to the extremities a hint of toning to the spine front hinge tender with some wear front hinge repaired bright and fresh pages. A clean copy of the scarce first issue in a lovely morocco binding. Elia is a collection of Lamb's popular essays each of which was originally published in London Magazine. Specifically it includes "The South-Sea House" "Christ's Hospital Five and Thirty Years Ago" "Dream-Children; A Reverie" and "Modern Gallantry" among others. Lamb a long-time clerk for the British East India Company began writing essays under the pseudonym "Elia" which he derived from a former colleague's surname. Lamb wrote in a colloquial and conversational style that made his essays beloved by his Edwardian and Victorian readers. Additionally Lamb included many of his friends and family in his writing loosely disguised by initials and pseudonyms. Mary Lamb Charles' sister and co-author of the popular Tales from Shakespeare 1807 appears as "Cousin Bridget." This first collection of Lamb's essays was complemented with a second volume in 1833 entitled The Last Essays of Elia: Being a Sequel to Essays Published under that Name. Interestingly while the American edition of the first collection published by Carey Lea and Carey in Philadelphia was preceded by this first British edition by five years the American issue of the second collection preceded its British counterpart; less restricted by copyright laws in the United States the American publishers were able to issue both Elia volumes simultaneously in 1828. . 1st Edition.
