A hint of rubbing to front joint occasional mild browning due to paper quality but A FINE COPY clean and fresh internally and in a lustrous binding.<br/> <br/> In a lovely Art Nouveau binding by a Belle Époque master this is a collection of poems assembled by essayist Charles Lamb 1775-1834 to launch the publishing career of his friend and future son-in-law Edward Moxon 1801-58 to whom he dedicated the work. Composed of rather slight verses composed for the amusement of Lamb's friends and of more substantial works previously printed in periodicals this first book bearing Moxon's imprint did well enough to attract the business of other prestigious poets many of them friends of Lamb. Moxon who married Lamb's adopted daughter Emma Isola in 1833 went on to print the works of Wordsworth Shelley Tennyson and other luminaries of the Victorian era. The graceful binding is by Belgian master craftsman Charles de Samblancx or Samblanx 1855-1943 who began his binding career at age 11 as an apprentice to Coppens. He eventually established his own firm though from 1889-1909 his gilder Jacques Weckesser was in partnership with him. His binding career extended over several decades and he worked in a variety of period styles sensitively reproducing the bindings of previous centuries. His work often involving great complexity of design is invariably executed with the highest degree of skill. Spine darker green than the covers though not at all noticeable in the four compartments that are almost solidly gilt front joint a little rubbed and with two-inch thin crack at top final leaf of ads with repaired curving two-inch tear into text isolated small stains or faint foxing but still very attractive--clean and fresh internally in a very lustrous binding sparkling with gilt.<br/> <br/> This is a handsomely bound copy of Lamb's largely autobiographical essays that embrace the broad subject of mankind at large as seen through the author's own experience and impressions. As Oxford Companion says Lamb's essays "present with exquisite humor and pathos and in a brilliant and inimitable style characters that the author has known . . . the productions of a playful or melancholy fancy . . . and general comments and criticism." The name "Elia" as Lamb says was "clapt down" on these essays in honor of a fellow clerk at South Sea House a building of commercial offices and the subject of the first essay. A second collection "The Last Essays of Elia" appeared in 1833. Charles Lamb 1775-1834 worked in the office of the East India Company and wrote poetry essays and plays. With his sister Mary he was the author of "Tales of Shakespeare" a flowing and lucid prose rendition of 20 of the bard's dramas that helped rekindle 19th century interest in the plays. The strikingly attractive binding done in an elaborately gilt style reminiscent of the Roger Payne era is the work of Riviere one of the foremost names among English binderies partly because the firm did consistently fine work and partly because it was so long in business. Robert Riviere began as a bookseller and binder in Bath in 1829 then set up shop as a binder in London in 1840; in 1881 he took his grandson Percival Calkin into partnership at which time the firm became known as Riviere & Son and the bindery continued to do business under the Riviere name until 1939 when it was acquired by Bayntun. Extremities with the occasional tiny nick spines slightly sunned covers with a few negligible scratches a few pages with light thumbing in the margins but all of these blemishes trivial. A FINE SET INSIDE AND OUT.<br/> <br/> This finely bound finely printed and strictly limited set includes the biography prose letters essays and poetry of "the prince of English essayists." According to Day Charles Lamb contributed to the essay form by concentrating on feeling rather than thought by projecting a fuller sense of self into the work and by imbuing his text with a poetic or lyrical quality. Lamb was also an accomplished poet writing in both rhyming and blank verse as well as a friend to many of the leading literary figures of the Romantic period--his correspondents include Wordsworth Southey Hazlitt and Coleridge whom he had known since childhood. Lamb's letters by turns witty and meditative reveal a life of intense reading and writing at a time when British literature was undergoing a radical transformation. Charles Lamb 1775-1834 was educated at Christ's Hospital and at 17 joined the East India House where he worked from 1792-1825. In 1796 Lamb's sister Mary stabbed and killed their mother with scissors in a fit of insanity. Charles took on her care as well as serving as sole support for a dying aunt and a prematurely senile father. Nonetheless Lamb and his sister were devoted to one another and lived long and productive lives publishing together the wildly popular "Tales from Shakespeare" 1807 and "Mrs. Leicester's School" 1809 both of which are included here. Though unsigned the bindings are extremely attractive and fittingly luxurious for the limited-edition contents--the thick gilt tooling luxurious doublures and red silk endpapers housing tactilely pleasing Japanese vellum make this set a delight both to have and to hold. Contemporary morocco over boards with a decorative design stamped in gold on the front cover and spine white moiré endpapers all edges gilt. The boards are rubbed with wear to the edges and corners front joint is partially split head and tail of spine back bumped and torn about very good. Contains over fifty manuscript entries most dating from 1874-77 when the album’s owner “Emma†was a student at Wesleyan Academy in Wilbraham Massachusetts. Also included are later entries dating up through the early 1880s and two or three final entries from the 1920s. Most of the entries are by fellow students and teachers at Wesleyan including a terrific 1877 pen & ink sketch by Emma’s fine arts teacher Watson F. Lamb. The sketch depicts the campus and various whimsical scenes including women in silhouette playing croquet and a portrait of a young man the artist in uniform with a bat and ball in hand titled: “Wesleyan B.B. No. 1â€. The album also features an accomplished calligraphic sketch of a bird and other decorated autograph entries. An attractive album dating from the decade when Wesleyan was the primary center of Methodist education in New England. hardcover

Blue cloth boards affixed to the front board is a plastic panel with a floral relief gilt decoration along the spine and all page edges gilt. The plastic panel has caused the front board to bow a bit rubbing to the rear board dulling to the spine front hinge starting and the title page is coming detached still very good with the relief fully intact. Two volumes uniformly bound in early brown calf with gilt titled leather labels and gilt rules on the spines. The warped covers are rubbed and scuffed and the leather is splitting along the joints. There is heavy chipping to the second volume's spine with partial loss of that volume's title label. 283 pages & 305 pages respectively illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of William Shakespeare engraved by Edwin after a painting by Zoust at the front of the first volume. The hinges are cracking and there is a small piece out from the top of the front endpaper of the first volume. Several signatures are slightly pulled. The edges of the first and last few pages of each volume are darkened and there is scattered foxing throughout with occasional light dampstaining. A complete set which collates perfectly with Welch 744 including the presence of the half-title at the front of the first volume. <p>First American edition.<p>RARE. In the present work first published in 1782 he focuses on sheep a subject in which he had a vested interest having introduced the Merino breed to France in an effort to improve the country's wool industry. The text covers all aspects of sheep breeding anatomy and husbandry and is accompanied by engravings of cheerful shepherds at their work the processing of wool dissected sheep organs and related images. These are attractively rendered offering visual appeal as well as scientific and agricultural data. Our third edition the first published following Daubenton's death includes an introductory biography by Étienne de Lacépède which he had delivered as a speech at the National Museum of Natural History. While "Instruction Pour les Bergers" appears in the market with some regularity the present exceptionally bright wide-margined partly unopened copy in contemporary boards is an unusually appealing copy of this work. In the ELIA volume there are some tiny ink spots in the margin of page 7 and pages 285-290 have tiny closed tears which have been delicately repaired. Tiny orange smudge on the side foredge. Light tanning along the edges of the free endpapers. Both volumes' pages have mild age-spotting and tanning but are otherwise unmarked and securely bound. Both volumes have two attached ribbon page markers. This copy of ELIA is the rare first edition from 1923. University of Virginia identifies this present edition as "1890 " but it is certainly a 20th century publication. Our research suggests that Harriss Printing & Advertising was active under that name from 1912 to the early 1920s. One may speculate this edition was issued in 1914 around the semicentennial of the battle. Whatever the case this is an extremely uncommon edition and likely the first separately printed of this interesting narrative of the North Carolina 2nd Artillery. Yan Tan Tethera is an ancient counting system used by Lake District shepherds to count their flocks. This counting rhyme is still chanted by Borrowdale shepherds as they gather in their flocks. Each time 'jiggot' is reached the shepherd pockets a stone to designate twenty sheep and the recitation is repeated. Gilt decorated compartments top edge gilt.<br /> <br /> A delightful anthology of Elizabethan poets including Thomas Sackville Thomas Kyd Christopher Marlowe Thomas Decker Ben Jonson William Rowley John Fletcher and Francis Beaumont among many others. The texts were compiled by Charles Lamb who although he worked for the East India Company also published articles essays and poems. He was a good friend of Samuel Taylor Coleridge contributing sonnets to his publications and moved in a political literary circle that included Shelley Byron Hazlitt and Hunt Gertz. This copy has been artfully bound by Root & Son. The London-based firm of W. Root & Son was active in from the late-19th until the 1941 Blitz destroyed their premises. The bindery was known for both fine leather bindings trade bindings and sets. Here their talents are displayed with a "Jansenist Style" binding that was first popular in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries identifiable by a plain exterior and elaborately tooled doublures.
