He was appointed Bishop of Lamego on 14 January 1692 then became Bishop of Coimbra on 6 April 1706 and exercised his office until his death in 1717. He was a bishop who greatly helped the religious orders the faithful through the parish priests and the students who came to the palace personally and secretly. He inaugurated the convent of Louriçal on 8 May 1709; laid the foundation stone for the current church of Santa Justa on 24 August 1710; presided over the transfer of the relics of Princess Santa Joana to a new tomb in Aveiro on 25 October 1711. He also presided over the transfer of the relics of Princesses Teresa and Sancha to new tombs in Lorvão; he laid the foundation stone for the Capuchin Franciscan College in Santo António da Estrela. A fine copy <br/><br/>Elizabethan poets whose work is represented here include Thomas Sackville; Thomas Kyd; Christopher Marlowe; Thomas Decker; Ben Jonson; William Rowley; John Fletcher; Francis Beaumont; etc.<br/><br/>Charles Lamb was born in London in 1775. He studied at Christ's Hospital where he formed a lifelong friendship with Samuel Taylor Coleridge. When Lamb was twenty years old he suffered a period of insanity and was confined to a psychiatric hospital. His sister Mary Ann Lamb had similar issues and in 1796 murdered her mother in a fit of madness. Mary was confined to an asylum but was eventually released into the care of her brother. Lamb became friends in London with a group of young writers who favored political reform including Percy Bysshe Shelley William Hazlitt Henry Brougham Lord Byron Thomas Barnes and Leigh Hunt. In 1796 Lamb contributed four sonnets to Coleridge's Poems on Various Subjects 1796. This was followed by Blank Verse 1798 and Pride's Cure 1802. Lamb worked for the East India Company in London but managed to contribute articles to several journals and newspapers including London Magazine The Morning Chronicle Morning Post and the The Quarterly Review. He is best known for his pseudonymous essays for London Magazine collected and published as Essays of Elia 1823 and for the popular evergreen Tales From Shakespeare 1807 his collaboration with his sister. The volume under notice went a long way to popularizing Shakespeare's contemporaries. He died in 1834. <br/><br/>The London bindery of W. Root & Son consistently turned-out excellent work both on fine bindings as here and on trade bindings and sets. Packer lists the firm in business in Red Lion Square in 1899-1901 and the December 1942 issue of The Rotarian notes with regret that W. ‎Sur la piste d’un cirque, Louis-Philippe (vu de dos mais reconnaissable aux favoris et au toupet) bondit de son cheval et passe à travers un cercle de papier représentant la « CHARTE // constitutionn […] [constitutionnelle] » tenu par deux personnages. Il s’agit de Talleyrand, à gche, juché sur un petit socle, incarnant la diplomatie, et de Persil en habit de magistrat, à dte, au milieu du public, de l’autre côté d’une palissade. Il incarne la « jugerie » (in explication), c'est-à-dire le ministère de la justice. Parmi les spectateurs, on peut reconnaître Lobau à gche, portant un bicorne, et Viennet derrière lui. Dans la partie de dte : Bugeaud, Fruchard, ainsi qu’Odier et Jollivet derrière eux. Enfin d’Argout se trouve à l’extrême dte. Les autres sont plus difficilement identifiables. L’explication précise la signification des attributs du roi : « (…) avec le rifflard qui représente la prudence, les culottes rapiécées qui représentent l’économie, et le faux toupet qui représente la maturité, vigoureuse encore et virile ». De plus, à gche au premier plan gît à terre un chapeau haut de forme décoré de la cocarde tricolore. A dte, enfin, un cosaque excite le cheval, un fouet à la main. Il représente « l’indépendance nationale » (in explication). La pl. ironise sur l’immense dépendance de la France de Louis-Philippe vis-à-vis de la Russie dans les affaires diplomatiques. D’après la presse d’opposition, le roi des Français va dans le sens des décisions prises par la Sainte-Alliance afin de ne pas la contrarier et risquer un incident. La pl. se propose de mettre en image une phrase extraite d’un numéro récent du Journal des débats : « On verra bientôt que le système sait surmonter toutes les difficultés, traverser tous les obstacles et briser toutes les résistances ».
