Eaton Land & Cattle Co. Permission Grants to Fish.
Bishop CA: Eaton Land and Cattle Co. 1920s. One printed permission slipped with blanks to be filled in manuscript and a Eaton Land and Cattle Company envelope with 2 cent postage preprinted. Excellent condition.In many ways Frederick Eaton was the man responsible for the growth of Los Angeles into a mega-city. In the early part of the 20th century Eaton and William Mulholland hit on a scheme to buy all the water rights on the Owens River in the Eastern Sierra thereby ensuring Los Angeles with the water necessary for expansion. Thet accomplished this by buying all the property along the river. In doing so Eaton a wealthy man who had once been the mayor of Los Angeles acquired for his own purposes a large piece of land in the Long Valley of Mono County which he called the Eaton Land & Cattle Company. The following from an Eaton family member - "The Eaton family issued permits for those wanting to fish on Eaton property in Long Valley-it was also to prevent the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power from interfering with Eaton irrigation projects. Pink Roma Fabriano paper wrappers titled in black with handmade gampi paper overlay also titled exactly overlaying the printed title on the pink leaf. Black endpapers. . 7 x 10 in. With a leaf from the deluxe edition of XI LXIVMOS: Memoirs of a Bibliomidget 2 x 2 " and a blue-and-gold marbled paper leaf. Also with four engraved devices printed in bronze gold and silver. Printed on handmade Barcham Green Bodleian paper. Fine. This advance "history" shares five planned projects from Heavenly Monkey: Anne Bromer's XI LXIVMOS: Memoirs of a Bibliomidget 2015 Barbara Hodgson's Mrs. Delaney Meets Herr Haeckle 2016 Harold Budd's Aurora Tears 2016 Francesca Lohmann's An Accumulated Alphabet 2017 and Josh Bell's Sci-Fi Violence 2016 though possibly not published. In October of 2015 Rollin Milroy wrote in the Heavenly Monkey blog "The cover paper is Roma Fabriano. It's a bizarre sheet in a patently non-HM color pink purchased for pennies on the dollar at the bankruptcy sale. The laid sheet probably machine-made doubtfully mould has an exaggerated screen side that makes it useless for printing. It's been in the studio for ages. But the color matches nicely with HM's newly acquired stock of bronze ink which will be re-appearing in the upcoming Harold Budd project" 10/12/15. Later in the month he wrote regarding the cover overlay paper "It's a lovely handmade gampi with the printed title positioned to perfectly overlay the same line on the Roma wrap. Because the gampi is so thin it's a little tricky fitting it around the book & getting it to stay in place - keeping the two lines in register - while sewing" 10/29/15.</p> Heavenly Monkey,

Vancouver: Heavenly Monkey Press 2018 One of forty-eight copies done in three different formats. Series 3 is one of twenty-four copies out of a total edition of forty-eight copies. Bound in cream-colored paper over boards at the HM Studio. Quarto. . Series 3 with a leaf from both Rollenhagen'a Nucleus Emblematum Selectissimorum and Winter's Collection of Emblemes Ancient & Moderne. Series 1 contained four leaves including leaves containing the same engravings from Rollenhagen and Winter; Series 2 contained a leaf from Rollenhaben paired with the same plate on a Wither leaf. With illustrations ornaments and decorative initials. A fine copy. From the publisher Rollin Milroy: "The focus of Labour Vertue Glorie however is not the content or interpretations of the two authors' emblems but the production and form of the books from which these sample leaves come. To that end the book reprints three of Wither's prefatory notes from A Collection: one about William Marshall's engraved frontispiece one about the game of lots included in the book and "To The Reader" in which he discusses at length the book's creation and intent. Each of these is appended with comments from a variety of sources discussing and sometimes disputing the author's words. The comments also provide some insights to how Wither adopted and more importantly adapted Rollenhagen's original work for his own purposes. While not exact facsimiles the reprinted texts follow the original's use of swash characters and seemingly random combinations of roman italic and majuscule types. Two pochoir frontispieces and nineteen vignettes by Walter Bachinski. Set in Weiss and American Uncial types and printed on dampened Barcham Green Canterbury handmade paper by Rollin Milroy. A fine copy as new. "The Lady or the Tiger was first published in The Century magazine in 1882. It was tremendously popular but readers did not like being left to draw their own conclusion. Shaw i.e. Lawrence in 1929 to British Columbia's first chief forested Martin Allerdale Grainger. Cobden-Sanderson 1840 - 1922 are two of the foremost private presses and their output was associated with an equisite attention to detail and fine letter printing. This beautifully produced leaf book begins with Pollard's essay that was written for the catalogue of William Andrews Clark Jr.'s renowned book collection published in 1921 by John Henry Nash. "Rather than a straight historical account of the two presses Pollard offers a meditation on their influences and influence particularly in matters of design and typography. It is embellished here with calligraphy by Martin Jackson and accompanied by a leaf from both of the presses: the Kelmscott's Golden Legend and the Doves English Bible." Crease on bottom left corner not affecting image. Published in Vanity Fair 10 June 1871.The Tichborne case was a legal cause célèbre that captivated Victorian England in the 1860s and 1870s. It concerned the claims by an individual sometimes referred to as Thomas Castro or as Arthur Orton but usually termed "the Claimant" to be the missing heir to the Tichborne baronetcy. He failed to convince the courts was convicted of perjury and served a long prison sentence.Roger Tichborne heir to the family's title and fortunes was presumed to have died in a shipwreck in 1854 at age 25. His mother clung to a belief that he might have survived and after hearing rumours that he had made his way to Australia she advertised extensively in Australian newspapers offering a reward for information. In 1866 a butcher known as Thomas Castro from Wagga Wagga came forward claiming to be Roger Tichborne. Although his manners and bearing were unrefined he gathered support and travelled to England. He was instantly accepted by Lady Tichborne as her son although other family members were dismissive and sought to expose him as an impostor.During protracted enquiries before the case went to court in 1871 details emerged suggesting that the Claimant might be Arthur Orton a butcher's son from Wapping in London who had gone to sea as a boy and had last been heard of in Australia. After a civil court had rejected the Claimant's case he was charged with perjury; while awaiting trial he campaigned throughout the country to gain popular support. In 1874 a criminal court jury decided that he was not Roger Tichborne and declared him to be Arthur Orton. Before passing a sentence of 14 years the judge condemned the behaviour of the Claimant's counsel Edward Kenealy who was subsequently disbarred because of his conduct.After the trial Kenealy instigated a popular radical reform movement the Magna Charta Association which championed the Claimant's cause for some years. Kenealy was elected to Parliament in 1875 as a radical independent but was not an effective parliamentarian. The movement was in decline when the Claimant was released in 1884 and he had no dealings with it. In 1895 he confessed to being Orton only to recant almost immediately. He lived generally in poverty for the rest of his life and was destitute at the time of his death in 1898. Although most commentators have accepted the court's view that the Claimant was Orton some analysts believe that an element of doubt remains as to his true identity and that conceivably he was Roger Tichborne. Colomb was born in Onchan Isle of Man the son of General George Thomas Colomb 1787–1874 and was the younger brother of British Vice-Admiral Philip Howard Colomb. He was educated privately and entered the Royal Naval College from which he passed in 1854 into the Royal Marine Artillery. After being variously employed with the Navy Army Militia and Volunteers he retired in 1869 with the rank of Captain. He thenceforth devoted himself to the study of naval and military problems on which he had already published some essays. His books on Colonial Defence and Colonial Opinions 1873 The Defence of Great and Greater Britain 1879 Naval Intelligence and the Protection of Commerce 1881 The Use and the Application of Marine Forces 1883 Imperial Federation: Naval and Military 1887 followed later by other similar works made him well known among the rising school of Imperialists and he was returned to parliament 1886–1892 as Conservative member for Bow and Bromley and afterwards 1895–1906 for Great Yarmouth. He was damaged politically by a personal scandal. Hughes-Hallet was the son of Charles Madras Hughes-Hallett and his wife Emma Mary Roberts. He became a colonel in the Royal Artillery. In 1885 he was elected as Member of Parliament for Rochester and reelected in 1886. Educated at Inverness Royal Academy Royal High School Edinburgh the University of Glasgow and Edinburgh University he was called to the Scottish bar in 1835. He was appointed Sheriff of Perth for 1858 to 1866 Solicitor General for Scotland from 1866 to 1867 and Lord Advocate from 1867 to 1868 and again from 1874 to 1876. He was Dean of the Faculty of Advocates from 1868 to 1874. He became a Queen's Counsel in 1868 and was appointed a Privy Counsellor in 1874. He was a made a Law Life Peer in 1876 as Baron Gordon of Drumearn in the County of Stirling and sat as a Lord of Appeal from 1876 to 1879. He was Conservative Member of Parliament for Thetford from 1867 to 1868 and for Glasgow and Aberdeen Universities from 1869 to 1876. He lived at 2 Randolph Crescent on the edge of the Moray Estate in western Edinburgh.
