His previously unknown memoirs of that service are note-worthy for their very ordinariness; few first-person accounts exist from enlisted men and those that do are largely from the more glamorous cavalry. Bode served in the Victorio campaign of 1880 without taking part in combat but spent most of his service in garrison duty at forts Sill and Gibson and on the Texas frontier. His memoirs offer an important window into the life of the ordinary foot soldier - tedious poorly rewarded consisting of stretches of loneliness and boredom punctuated by hard work and privation.
