Her poem "There are fairies at the bottom of our garden"[1] was set to music by English composer Liza Lehmann. Her Christmas carol "Lift your hidden faces", set to a French carol tune, was included in the Anglican hymnal Songs of Praise (1931) as well as in the Hutterian Brotherhood's Songs of Light (1977). Peggy Fortnum, das jüngste von sechs Kindern in ihrer Familie, verlebte die Ferien ihrer Kindheit in Frankreich. Sie war eine Tochter des Commanders Arthur John Fortnum. Sie absolvierte ihre Schulzeit in St. Margarets in Harrow[3] und begann ihre künstlerische Ausbildung an der Turnbridge Wells School of Arts and Crafts. Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs war sie im Auxiliary Territorial Service beschäftigt, anschließend lebte sie in London, wo sie die Central School of Arts and Crafts besuchte. Dort brachte John Farleigh, der für Sylvan Press arbeitete, sie auf die Idee, sich mit Buchillustrationen zu befassen. 1944 begann sie an Illustrationen für das Buch Dorcas the Wooden Doll zu arbeiten. Zu ihren bekanntesten Werken gehören die Illustrationen zu Paddington Bear von Michael Bond. Fortnum kreierte die Gestalt dieses Bären nach ihren eigenen Vorstellungen und illustrierte alle Paddington-Bear-Bände bis 1974. Spätere Illustratoren der Paddington-Bear-Geschichten wie R. W. Alley, Fred Banbery, Ivor Wood, Barry Macey, David MacKee und John Lobban hielten sich strikt an Peggy Fortnums Vorgaben. Neben ihren zahlreichen Buchillustrationen arbeitete Fortnum auch fürs Kinderfernsehen und für verschiedene Zeitschriften. Fortnum illustrierte unter anderem Werke von Oscar Wilde, Margaret Jowett, Kenneth Grahame und Noel Streatfeild. Marbled endpapers with gilt edgings. The text block is solid and in very nice clean bright condition. AEG All Edges Gilt . The first book is illustrated with 17 hand-colored copper plate engravings by W. Dickinson after Bunbury. The second book which is bound directly after the first has 11 hand-colored copperplate engravings by W. Dickinson after Bunbury. "BUNBURY HENRY WILLIAM 1750�1811 amateur artist and caricaturist was born in 1750 being the second son of the Rev. Sir William Bunbury bart. of Mildenhall in Suffolk. The Bunburys were an old Norman family who are mentioned in Stephen's time as established at Bunbury in Cheshire. Young Bunbury was educated at Westminster School and afterwards at St. Catharine's Hall Cambridge. Both at school and college he seems to have acquired an early reputation as a humorous draughtsman going so far at Westminster as to etch �A Boy riding upon a Pig � a copy of which is to be found in the British Museum Print Room; and at Cambridge accumulating a fair gallery of ungainly dons and awkward undergraduates.
