A New Edition Carefully Corrected and Considerably Enlarged by Many Additional Articles Notes and Plates. etc. Complete with all plates present
London: T. Cadell and W. Davies 1812. Hardcover. Good - to Very Good . Octavo 20 volumes complete with all plates present. In contemporary full treecalf with gilt spines morocco spine labels gilt borders and marbled endpapers. The volumes range from about good to very good or better condition. Most of the spine ends are worn and there is general but shallow wear to the corners and fore-edges of many volumes. The front board of Volume I is detached but present and some other volumes share a similar but happier fate with the front board hanging on by the stitching. The stitching is thick rope so while the outer joints are no longer holding the rope is keeping the binding together more images upon request. The plates are overall in lovely condition with as many as a few dozen affected by mild to moderate foxing or age-toning mostly in the birds section and mostly within Volume XII. Still the overwhelming majority of the plates are bright and clean without so much as a single spot of foxing. Happy to provide any images of any specific plates upon request. The text leaves opposite the plates are partly age-toned as is to be expected but all other text leaves are bright and clean with only the most scattered foxed leaves. Some faint and shallow dampstains to a few volumes hardly affecting any plates. Plate III in Volume I a folding plate has a thumb-sized chip at one corner not approaching the image. There were a few binding/printing mistakes but all in the positive or at least neutral direction - there are two copies of plate 254 bound in right next to each other and plates 46-54 in Volume XII are all in the wrong order but all present. A few spines are just about split but holding. Some minor and seemingly incomplete repairs to a few spine labels they were not re-titled in gilt - see images but this is otherwise a completely original set with no other evident repairs. Though external condition makes this decidedly not a fine set in terms of condition the plates are overwelmingly in lovely shape and the whole set is mercifully complete. Bookplate of Joseph Neeld appears in each volume. Neeld was a Solicitor in Middlesex England around the time of publication and this could have belonged to him or his son of the same name who was soon after an MP for Gatton Surrey and later Chippenham Wiltshire. A former owner has inserted several small paper labels with the Latin names of species figured. Spines with five raised bands rich gilt compartments with floral vignettes two morocco labels with gilt titles. Marbled endpapers. Edges red. The complete first 15 volumes first 4to edition "PMM edition" of this large and important series on natural history by Georges-Louis Leclerc Comte de Buffon 1707-1788. Together they form a coherent segment of the whole work namely the origin of the world the history of life the natural history of Man and that of the other terrestrial mammals including domestic animals apes and monkeys cats dogs deer pachyderms rodents etc. etc. Other parts not included here deal with birds fish whales amphibians and reptiles and with the minerals. The work never reached the stage where all the animals including the invertebrates were dealth with. This only happened in the 19th century when the so-called "Suites de Buffon" were published by other French zoologists. However the mammals treated are described in-depth and well-illustrated by De S�ve one of the best natural history illustrators of the 18th century. Plate numbering of 13 erratic; one shield abraded. Some rubbing to to the boards and spines several sections a bit spotted or age-toned margins of a few volumes with some dampstaining a few old marginal repairs but generally clean the plates usually much cleaner. Paris Imprimerie Royale 1770-1785. 18 volumes in 18. Large 12mo 18.0 x 10.5 cm. Text with 264 engraved plates. Uniform contemporary half calf over speckled boards. Spines with five raised gilt-ornamented bands; compartments with gilt floral patterns and two morocco labels in red or brown short title and black part number. This is the complete bird section volumes 14-31 usually found separately of Buffon's Histoire Naturelle g�n�rale et particuli�re published by the Imprimerie Royale from 1749 to 1804 in 44 volumes. Nissen only quotes 262 plates. The plates are after De S�ve and depict the birds in their natural surroundings including nice architectural design. Some light shelfwear one spine label with some loss; some slight foxing in the text plates clean. The last two volumes published four years after volume 16 in a slightly different binding see pictures. A nice set in beautiful contemporary almost uniform bindings.
