A beautifully preserved volume in very good condition.<br><br>Compte de Buffon was a French naturalist mathematician cosmologist and encyclopedic author. His works influenced the next two generations of naturalists including Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and Georges Cuvier. Buffon published thirty-six quarto volumes of his Histoire naturelle during his lifetime; with additional volumes based on his notes and further research being published in the two decades following his death. It has been said that "Truly Buffon was the father of all thought in natural history in the second half of the 18th century." His anthology on Natural history has been reprinted and translated numerous times this being an earlier edition in original French. Cited as the father of biogeography Buffon's Law postulated that creatures "improved" and "degenerated" after dispersing from a center of creation. He based his theory on comparative anatomy studies. Buffon tried to explain the origin of living things by spontaneous generation of elementary particles and its development as a consequence of climate and diet.
