Uniform contemporary polished tree-calf with empire style gilt borders and ornaments. Red and black morocco labels with gilt title. Marbled endpapers. Edges speckled red. A massive work and part of a larger series on various natural history subjects ranging from botany to entomology and from mineralogy to conchology but this is the complete section dealing with mammals. The first two volumes contain a general introduction to the Animal Kingdom followed by three volumes dealing with Man two with monkeys and apes one with whales and othere aquatic mammals and 13 with all other mammals including cats bears deer pachyderms bats marsupials etc. etc. Sonnini was both the author and editor of this "suite de Buffon". The fine engravings are by Barraband Berthault Blanchard Duhamel Racine and others. Several plate numbers are out of sequence but none are missing. Plate X and XI of volume 11 are one one leaf. Boards with some mainly minor rubbing a few volumes with the leather on the boards not the spines more abraded. Some light in a few sections moderate age-toning and some spotting throughout; the plates generally cleaner. some paper loss in the margin of quadrup�des volume 1 pp. 55-56; and volume 5 pp. 101-102 and 263-264; one gathering in volume 12 detached otherwise a very good unmarked and attractively bound set. A very good early translation of this classic work in a lovely original binding. Some hinges needing attention but still great to see in this binding. Clean and bright internally. Natural History General and Particular discusses several differing species in the animal kingdom from Apes to the Hippopotamus. Volume IX is a corrections and additions volume providing lots of further information. There are 307 illustrated plates across all volumes conveying numerous animals such as dogs cats and elephants. Collated complete with all plates. Comte de Buffon was a French author and his natural history wasoriginally published from 1749-1804. It spanned to an encyclopedic collection of 36quartos. This English translation was published priorto the to completion of this work. The work ended up being limited to the animal and mineral kingdoms. Thistranslation has numerous notes and observations by William Smellie a Scottish encyclopedist and naturalist. The Second Edition of this translation. Condition: In full tree calf bindings. Externally generally smart with patches of rubbing to the spines jointsand extremities. Split to the front joint of volume I. Front hinge to volume I is tender with cords showing. Small loss to the head of spine to volume I. Rear joint to volume I is starting but firm with the hinge tender. Hinges to volume II are starting but firm. Front joint and hinge tovolume IIIhave failed and board is detached. Front endpaper has also detached. Rear joint and hinge to vol III is weak and may detach with further handling. Édouard Traviès (1809 - 1870) kann als einer der brillantesten Tierzeichner und -illustratoren des 19. Jahrhunderts gelten. Seine Arbeiten (häufig Vögel und Insekten, aber auch andere Tiere), die er zwischen 1831 und 1866 regelmäßig im Pariser Salon ausstellte, zeigen eine bis dahin kaum erreichte Präzision und Ausdruckskraft, die auch heute noch begeistert. Original-Zeichnungen und -Aquarelle des Künstlers sind im internationalen Auktionshandel begehrt. Druckwerke bzw. Sammelwerke Traviès' - wie das hier vorliegende - sind im Original heute kaum noch erhältlich.‎

‎Beide Bände in gutem Zustand: Bei Band 1 Kapitale etwas ausgefranst, oben mit leichten Anrissen, sonst sehr sauber erhalten. Bei Band 2 wurde der Rücken unter Verwendung des Original-Rückenschildes fachmännisch erneuert. Diese Arbeit ist sehr gut ausgeführt und fällt kaum ins Auge. Vorderdeckel etwas berieben und geringfügig fleckig sowie mit erkennbarem Abdruck eines runden Gegenstandes. Die Tafeln partiell geringfügig fleckig, sonst gut erhalten und ohne Läsionen. Schönes Exemplar dieses brillant gestaltetes Werkes der Tier-Illustration. ‎Edition originale collective des travaux de Vicq d’Azyr avec un discours de Moreau sur sa vie et ses ouvrages, très remanié et augmenté par rapport à celui qu’il avait précédemment publié ; Moreau fut le collaborateur et le continuateur de l’ouvrage “Médecine” en 13 volume in-4° publié de 1787 à 1830. Fondateur de l’anatomie comparée, il mena des recherches fondamentales sur le cerveau et donna son nom au “faisceau de Vicq d’Azyr”, le tractus mamillothalanicus; il a collaboré à l’Encyclopédie ; il a imaginé la laryngotomie intercrico-thyroïdienne; et ses travaux ont conduit à plusieurs découvertes et progrès médicaux par la suite. Il fut le premier médecin de Marie-Antoinette et médecin consultant de Louis XVI, à ce titre, il soigna le jeune dauphin qui était malade alors qu’il était détenu dans la prison du Temple, mais décéda lui-même juste avant le jeune prince. Enfin, il faut noter que Vicq d’Azyr fonda la société Royale de Médecine avec Lassone, il en devint même le Secrétaire perpétuel ; il fut membre de l’Académie des Sciences et fut le premier médecin élu à l’Académie Française, en 1788, au siège de Buffon. Bel exemplaire, bien frais d’intérieur et dans une belle reliure uniforme du temps.‎
