Many species frogs snakes lizards salamanders turtles etc. are depicted in their natural habitat. The work is here in the new edition published at Amsterdam and Dordrecht the only quarto edition to rival the original French Imprimerie Royale edition. The last 2 leaves in vol. 1 give a list of the plates for both volumes.Georges Louis Leclerc 1707-1788 -- in 1717 his father became Comte de Buffon and Louis XV later made Georges Comte de Buffon -- was an inconspicuous student who only showed a special talent for mathematics. Initially he combined a career in finance with one in science translating important works by Hales and Newton into French. In 1739 Buffon became director of the Jardin du Roi later the Jardin des Plantes and the Histoire naturelle may have originated as a description of the royal collection. It appeared from 1749 to 1804 and eventually comprised 44 volumes. Buffon was assisted among others by the anatomist Louis Daubenton and the final volumes were completed after his death under the direction of Comte de Lacépède.From the Stedelijk Gymnasium Bibliotheek with its stamp on title-pages and a few flyleaves. The present series on reptiles and amphibians had been followed rather than preceded by the series on minerals so that the bindings are numbered 25 and 26. The Dutch chapter contains some new additions not included in the original French including an interesting description by the Amsterdam physician J.C. Klockner of the preparation and stuffing of a dead hippopotamus that was shipped from the Cape of Good Hope to Amsterdam.Ad 2: First edition of the Dutch translation of Versuche mit Schnecken by the German entomologist mycologist and clergyman Jacob Christian Schäffer 1718-1790. It is an account of many experiments executed on several species of snails to find out whether the heads including the tentacles grow back after decapitation which Schäffer finds out to be the case. It includes 7 plates all coloured by hand showing different species of snails in different stages after their decapitation.Title-page slightly damaged as if something was pasted on it and later removed hardly affecting the text slightly creased throughout with some occasional minor stains or foxing. Binding rubbed along the extremities with partly cracked hinges. First edition of the first 15 volumes of Buffon's justly famous Histoire naturelle the complete first series covering the formation of the earth humans mammalian quadrupeds and apes and also describing the royal collection of Louis XV. Buffon's work presents "for the first time a complete survey of natural history in popular form'' PMM.Buffon opens the first volume with an essay called "Théorie de la terre" where "for the first time he outlines a satisfactory account of the history of our globe and of its development as a fitting home for living things '' PMM. In the second volume Buffon offers a short treatise on general biology. In his treatise on humans found in volumes II and III Buffon "studied the human species by the same methods that he applied to animal species including the psychological moral and intellectual life of man. From his exhaustive research for the Histoire naturelle des quadrupèdes volumes IV-XV Buffon came to the conclusion that it was necessary to reintroduce the notion of family. Breaking with the spirit of his time Buffon attempted to separate science from metaphysical and religious ideas. As a disciple of Locke he denied idealistic metaphysics stating that mental abstractions can never become principles of either existence or real knowledge; these can come only as the results of sensation'' DSB. There is a table of contents at the beginning of each volume listing species/types of bird each of which has a written description followed by exquisite engraved plates of the described birds. These engravings being by Francois-Nicolas Martinet who had also collaborated on the L'Ornithologie by Mathurin Jacques Brisson in 1760 as well as in the Encyclopaedia of Diderot. By the end of his lifetime he was so experienced in producing ornithological engravings that he published his own book of them. He was celebrated for the realism with which he drew as contemporaries and predecessors lacked proportion when drawing birds which made their actual identification for an amateur ornithologist extremely difficult. Buffon was an aristocratic eighteenth century naturalist mathematician and biologist. He was appointed keeper of the Jardin du Roi later the Jardin des Plantes and the collection connected with it the Cabinet du Roi in 1739. He augmented the collection of birds exponentially increasing it to more than 800 species gathered from all four corners of the globe. In 1765 at Buffon's direction Martinet began drawing and painting the collection and engraved the plates under the supervision of Edme Daubenton. In 1770 the first volume devoted to birds was published: 'Its popularity was primarily assured by Buffon's great literary ability which allowed him to present even the most difficult topics in such sparkling style in such a universally understandable form and so fascinating a manner that as was said even ladies found amusement in reading about them. Seit der Erhebung seiner Ländereien zur Grafschaft nannte sich der aus Montbard in Burgund stammende Georges-Louis Leclerc "Graf von Buffon" nach einem in seinen Besitzungen liegendem Dorf. Dem abgeschlossenen Juraexamen folgten medizinische botanische und mathematische Studien. 1733 wurde er Mitglied der "Academie royale des sciences" bei der er bis 1748 über zwanzig Arbeiten u. a. über Gravitation Pendelbewegungen Ballistik Raketen optische Phänomene und zoologische Fragen einreichte. 1739 wurde Buffon das Amt des Superintendenten der Königlichen Gärten überantwortet mit dem auch die Betreuung der naturhistorischen Sammlungen des Königs verbunden war. Der Plan einen Katalog dieser Sammlungen zu verfassen gab den Anstoß für Buffons Lebenswerk die "Histoire naturelle" 1749-1804. 36 der insgesamt 44 Bände konnte B. noch zu Lebzeiten abschließen. Von dem die moderne Biologie begründenden Systems des schwedischen Naturforschers Carl von Linne EA. 1735 hielt Buffon nichts. Er ordnete stattdessen die Tiere nach ihrer Bedeutung für den Menschen. So behandelte er in seinem Werk über die Vierfüßler zuerst die Haustiere. Vorliegend aus dem Nachdruck der ersten dt. Ausgabe der 4. Bd. von 7 Bänden der "Allg. Naturgesch.". Die österr. Ausgabe enthält die seitenverkehrten Nachdrucke der wesentlich häufigeren Berliner Ausgabe bei Pauli. Vorliegender Bd. befasst sich inhaltlich mit der Fortpflanzung.
