Il est le premier à s'embarquer dans ce voyage-là. Il est historien, habitué à dépouiller les vieux livres. Leur siècle déborde de récits de voyages et d'explorations. Il y puise. Il nous embarque vers les pôles, dans les mangroves. Il s'émerveille d'un colibri. C'est un raconteur, un raconteur et un rêveur. Comme pour le récit de la tempête à Cordouan dans "La Mer", il part de sa table d'écriture elle-même : cette année 1866, il écrit le terrible livre du coeur sanglant de la Révolution française, "Quatre-vingt-treize".
