Complete with 171 hand-coloured engraved plates of which 23 are larger folding plates after Frederick William Smith and Samuel Holden some heightened with gum arabic tissue guards one plate of garden design. Bound in contemporary full black gilt-decorated straight grained morocco; bindings good and strong with all boards firmly attached but with some chipping and loss and rubbing to the leather spines. Contents clean and tight original marbled end papers plates generally bright a few with light spotting or slightly marked a few folding plates a little worn/creased at leading edge. A very good run of the first four volumes. Very reasonably priced with the plates working out at less that �6.50 each. Nissen BBI 2351; Great Flower Books p.85; Stafleu TL2 7544 The Magazine of Botany was illustrated with fine botanical plates of which Paxton notes in his introduction to volume 10 "the Embellishments of this work has been brought as near perfection as it is possible to attain. It is indeed suggested by some of our friends that they are too beautiful; and that the plants they represent are not ordinarily so handsome as they are here depicted. Such a view however is a mistaken one: it arises from a rule which we adopt in the choice of subjects for our drawings and which is to have them prepared whenever practicable from specimens that are very favourably grown. on account of the stimulus it gives to those who see our plates to grow their specimens to the like excellence". From 1826 to 1858 Paxton was chief gardener at the Duke of Devon's Chatsworth Estate establishing it as "the most famous garden in England. and in the Magazine he described many of his plants and innovations at Chatsworth" ODNB. A complete run of this important 19th century periodical bound with all the original printed green wrappers and advert pages from the monthly parts these wrappers include detailed contents lists and notes. We believe this set is complete with all plates; additionally there are numerous in-text woodcut illustrations some of which are full-page. Generally in very good condition but the bindings to vols II & II were worn and have now been stabilised. Collation - Vol. I: pp. 860 wrappers; title page with engraved vignette two large folding plates. Vol. II: pp. iv 572 wrappers; title page; lithographic frontispiece uncoloured; 8 hand-coloured plates. Vol. III pp. 6 529 wrappers; title page title now "The Horticultural Register and General Magazine of all Useful and Interesting Discoveries connected with Natural History and Rural Subjects; hand-coloured frontispiece plate. Vol. IV: pp. 487 wrappers/adverts; title page title now simply "The Horticultural Register" and edited by James Main and now published by Orr & Smith; folding frontispiece plate toned three further engraved plates. Vol. V: pp. 2476 wrappers/adverts; half-title page with errata title page and two hand-coloured frontispiece plates. Contemporary half calf bindings with marbled boards. Vol. I good with a little general wear and rubbing a few small repairs but binding remains strong; internally a little water-staining to some pages in the first half a few pages a little more marked but aesthetic only most pages clean; Vol. II & III bindings are worn and chipped with cracks or partial cracks to the joints however they have been professionally stabilised and remain serviceable contents of these two volumes generally very good a little offsetting to the plates; vols.
