A very good short run of four volumes spanning the period 1822-1825 textblock with good margins and 334 bright hand-coloured engraved plates of which 49 are folding. Three volumes uniformly bound in contemporary half green calf with gilt lettering to spines marbled boards faded to brown on the spines which are a little worn and rubbed but all remain good and strong discreet professional repair to the front joint of volume 52. Volume 49 of the same contemporary binding but with recent new green morocco spine. All edges of the four volumes are richly gilt. The volumes include the following plate numbers: v. 49 2273-2355; v. 50 2356-2440; v. 51 2441-2522; v. 52 2523-2606. Title pages to vols 49 & 51only indexes to vols 49 50 & 51only. As stated good margins - leaf size 145 x 235 mm. Contents good and tight oringal pale yellow endpapers new endpapers to vol. 49 to match a few pages with light foxing/spotting generally clean plates generally very clean and bright the odd spot to a few plates. No inscriptions. The majority of plates are after J. Curtis but with a few contributed by W. Herbert Sowerby Edwards and F. Illustrations: Illustrated throughout with text illustrations. Bell's classic work on the hand illustrated with his own small vignettes, discusses the hand's anatomy, phsyiology, bio-mechanics and compartive anatomy, as well as its utility and adaptive importance, the sense of touch, and related topics. Charles Bell (1774-1842), Scottish surgeon, anatomist, physiologist, neurologist, artist and philosophical theologian. he is noted for the difference between sensory nerves and motor nerves in the spinal chord. He is also noted for describing Bell's palsy. In 1829 Francis Egerton, eighth Earl of Bridgewater, died and in his will, he left a large sum of money to the President of the Royal Society of London. The will stipulated the money was to be used to write, print and publish one thousand copies of a work On the Power, Wisdom, and Goodness of God. The President of the Royal Society Davies Gilbert appointed eight gentlemen to write separate treatises on the subject. In 1833, he published the fourth Bridgewater Treatise, The Hand: Its Mechanism and Vital Endowments as Evincing Design. Bell published four editions of The Hand. [-See Wiki from more info].
