Although no more than four miles square the Island of Penguins hosts at certain seasons of the year no less than five million birds - duykers cormorants oyster-catchers sea-gulls sea-swallows or terns the 'sacred' ibis sand plovers and quite literally millions of penguins. This Island of Penguins is the principal breeding-ground of the Blackfooted Penguins who because of the unpleasant noise of braying which they make are also know as Jackass Penguins. This is an original botanical watercolour painting of a Colchium Waterlily painted by Lorna B. Kell. The internal mount dimensions are 255 x 170mm. "Lorna Beatrice Kell born in London 1914. Painter of still life and abstracts printmaker and textile designer. She studied at Hornsey School of Art 1930-3 her teachers including Russell Reeve Frank Winter and Norman Janes. She joined Henry Lorraine Kell shortly after he began Lorraine Designs in 1935 married him and became sole proprietor in 1956. The firm specialised in commemorative scarves for Liberty of London the Oxford Collection and others. Kell was elected to the Society of Graphic Artists in 1959 an artist of repute Kell was President for eleven years. She saw the Society through some difficult times and helped to keep it well established at a time when tradtional art was often ridiculed by the public as conceptual art became the latest trend Kell was a founder-fellow of the Society of Botanical Artists and a fellow of the Royal Horticultural Society winning its Grenfell Medal. She produced botanical drawings for the Junior Encyclopaedia Britannica and showed at RA RE London Guildhall Paris Salon and in the provinces. She Lived in Barnet Hertfordshire. This particular painting signed Lorna B Kell but not dated. This is a good example of her work and shows her fluency and ability to capture the essence of the botanical subject in this case a fine Colchium.
