The Prairie Enthusiast called the 2001 edition of his book a "readable and understandable introduction to prairie and the general steps in carryng out a reconstruction." Now this second edition reflects his increased experience with reconstructing and restoring prairie grasslands. Kurtz has completely revised every chapter of the first edition from site selection and harvest to soil preparation seeding postplanting mowing burning growth and development. He has written new chapters on establishing prairie in old pastureland and on the judicious use of herbicides including a table that shows particular problem species the types of herbicides that are most effective at controlling them and the timing and method of treating them. A superb complete set of the original 44 plates of Geraniologia no title leaf all very bright and clean without foxing or other marks they are in their original uncoloured state and printed on wove paper. Because they have never been bound the edges are all uncut the sheets measuring approxing 355mm x 535mm. To find a set in such clean condition in untrimmed state is exceptional. A few of the later plates are a little worn/creased to the margins plate 41 is a little more creased at the top just affecting the plate impression. The title page is not present in this set but a facsimile has been expertly let into the front panel of the Solander box. This is a superb production finished in green buckram and inlaid with panels of red morocco to the spine and front board which are stamped in gilt. The edges are finished in mauve cloth and the box lined with acid-free paper; the plates are protected within a folding card casing. This rare portfolio contains some of Redoute's best early work. L'Heritier took great interest in and helped guide the careers of both Pierre Joseph Redout� and James Sowerby both important botanical artists. In this present work six plates are based on paintings by Sowerby while thirty-one are after Redoute The other artists involved being Claude Aubriet Louis Freret B. Pernotin and S. Taylor. L'Heritier chose to leave the plates uncoloured because he felt that "if his engravings were coloured much of the sharpness and precision would be lost. The plates by Sowerby and Redoute are particularly fine and provide us with an example of the early work of these two botanical illustrators when they were still under the influence of the great French tradition established by Robert" An Oak Spring Flora. Due to the outbreak of the French Revolution the Geraniologia was never finished and was finally published in ca 1792 but the text was never published. Louis Auguste Alphonse de Launay, né le 19 juillet 1860 à Paris 9e et mort dans cette ville le 30 juin 1938, est un géologue et spéléologue français, spécialiste des gîtes minéraux. C'est aussi un écrivain, biographe et poète. Il sort classé 3e de Polytechnique puis entre à l'École des mines de Paris en 1881. Il est très vite passionné par les sciences de la Terre. D'abord nommé ingénieur des mines à Moulins (1885), puis à Dijon (1889), il est nommé la même année professeur à l'École nationale supérieure des mines de Paris, à laquelle il reste attaché jusqu'à sa retraite, et où il se fait remarquer comme inventeur de la métallogénie. En 1889, il succède à Alfred Fuchs à la chaire de géologie appliquée de l'École des mines, qu'il occupe jusqu'en 1935. Il est aussi professeur de géologie, minéralogie et paléontologie à l'École nationale des ponts et chaussées et professeur à l'École des sciences politiques. Son domaine scientifique de prédilection est l'étude des gisements métallifères, et notamment les gisements d'or, dont il essaie de déterminer la genèse, la tectonique, la répartition.
