Œuvre d'un ami de Rousseau et d'Alembert, qui passe pour un fils naturel (1755-1833) du prince de Conti, cet ouvrage à visée scientifique (les notes occupent les deux derniers tiers du volume) est un bijou d’anthropomorphisme où abondent les remarques sur le mimétisme comportemental du singe avec l’homme, grande préoccupation des savants naturalistes de l’époque.Pour étudier à loisir sa « charmante petite créature », l’auteur, séduit par son « cri perlé et argentin » et les « jolis lacs d’amour » qu’elle décrit en s’élançant de terre, lui fait boire du vin de Calcavallo : « ma petite Jocko » devenait « plus expansive, plus confiante » jusqu’à « s’approcher de moi assez près pour toucher légèrement mes habits du bout de ses doigts ». La métaphore du commerce amoureux se poursuit jusqu’à la cabane de Jocko où, de libations en bacchanales, loin de toute dépravation, c’est le chemin contraire au dévêtissement ordinaire que les galants empruntent : « comme sa nudité me déplaisait, je m’amusais à la draper avec des châles de couleurs vives » et bientôt, d’elle-même, « sitôt que j’étais parti, elle se déshabillait, et ne reprenait ses vêtements que vers le temps où elle (…) pressentait mon arrivée »…La fable inspira les dramaturges Gabriel de Lurieu et Edmond Rochefort qui mirent en scène "Jocko ou le singe du Brésil", représenté au Théâtre de la Porte Saint-Martin dès l’année suivante. Le succès immédiat et la longévité de la pièce ainsi que la réédition, plusieurs fois au cours du siècle, du livre de Pougens, sont à l’origine des histoires mettant en scène des singes par la suite ; ainsi de Hergé qui choisira en 1936 de nommer Jocko le singe accompagnant les aventures de Jo et Zette.Le présent exemplaire est enrichi d’une longue et spirituelle lettre de recommandation signée et dictée par l’auteur frappé de cécité (3 pages in-8, le 5 mars 1827), adressée à la comtesse d’Hautpoul pour faire débuter une jeune première à l’Opéra, « Adèle Bibre, âge vingt ans, très bonne musicienne, puis de l’âme, une sensibilité, une expression vraies, une intelligence peu commune. Sa voix est charmante, pure : elle chante et ne crie pas, ce qui est bien quelque chose à l’opéra. Ajoutez à tous ces avantages de belles formes académiques… ».On joint la réédition de ce texte (Paris, Charavay, 1881, in-18, demi-chagrin havane, dos à nerfs, couvertures conservées, tête dorée, XXI + 140 pp., jolie gravure en frontispice par Régamey) incluant la belle préface originale d’Anatole France charmé par ce récit écrit à la manière du dix-huitième siècle : « il y a plus de poésie dans les vingt-cinq pages de Pougens et plus de vérité aussi que dans tous les volumes de M. Jules Verne ». Très bel ensemble.
