Edwards George.
Pl. 71 The Brown and Spotted Heathcock
London:: The College of Physicians 1743-51. First edition. Fine . Pl. 71 The Brown and Spotted Heathcock. Original hand-colored copperplate engraving. Quarto 11.5 x 9 inches. Includes text. George Edwards London 1694-1773 was a Fellow of the Royal Society and Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in London who rejected his early formal training and potential career in business to pursue his passion in natural history. His dedication and talent as a draftsman and naturalist was evident thus gaining the attention of Sir Hans Sloane President of the College of Physicians and the Royal Society. Sir Hans offered Edwards the post of Librarian of the Royal College of Physicians in London and enlisted him to draw the natural curiosities of Sloane's private museum. This connection became the inspiration for Edward's masterful achievements; A Natural History of Uncommon Birds Published between 1743 and 1751 and the subsequent work; Gleanings of Natural History which was produced between 1758 and 1764. These two works illustrated and documented many previously unrecorded specimens of birds reptiles and insects held in England's private collections up to the mid eighteenth century. A monumental achievement Edwards documented- in English and French- painted engraved and hand-colored every one of the fine compositions in this Pre-Linnaean natural history opus. Although not a field naturalist Edwards placed many of his birds and animals in landscaped settings which was unusual for the time. In other compositions birds are elegantly perched on stylized branches in a classic Georgian format more decorative than realistic charming nonetheless. A gracious and humble man Edwards established firm and respected alliances with naturalist pioneers Carl Linnaeus 1707-78 Mark Catesby 1683-1749 from whom he learned the art of engraving and subsequently aided Catesby in the revision of his publication; The Natural History of Carolina Florida and the Bahama Islands London c.1754 as well as William Bartram from whom he acquired several species of Pennsylvanian birds included in his volumes. As Edwards' work predates the completion of the Linnaean classification system Linnaeus was to borrow the English names of many of Edwards species for his renowned work on classification and nomenclature. EISELEY LOREN; HOLTHAUS GARY INTRODUCTION
The Firmament Of Time
University of Nebraska Press Lincoln and London: 1999. Softcover. Brand new book. Loren Eiseley examines what we as a species have become in the late twentieth century. His illuminating and accessible discussion is a characteristically skillful and compelling synthesis of hard scientific theory factual evidence personal anecdotes haunting reflection and poetic prose. Loren Eiseley 1907-1977 naturalist essayist philosopher and poet won the John Burroughs Medal for best publication in the field of nature writing in 1961 for The Firmament of Time. Introducer Gary Holthaus a freelance poet and writer is the author of Wide Skies: Finding a Home in the West. "Dr. Eiseley describes with zest and admiration the giant steps that have led man in a scant three hundred years to grasp the nature of his extraordinary past and to substitute a natural world for a world of divine creation and intervention. . . . An irresistible inducement to partake of the almost forgotten excitements of reflection."New Yorker "This book has a warm feeling for all natural phenomena; it has a rapport with man and his world and his problems; it has appraisal and even blame and condemnation; but above all it has hope and belief. And it has the beauty of prose that characterizes Eiseley's philosophical moods."Chicago Sunday Tribune "There can be no question that Loren Eiseley maintains a place of eminence among nature writers. His extended explorations of human life and mind set against the backdrop of our own and other universes are like those to be found in every book of nature writing currently available. . . . We now routinely expect our nature writers to leap across the chasm between science natural history and poetry with grace and ease. Eiseley made the leap at a time when science was science and literature was well literature. . . . His writing delivered science to nonscientists in the lyrical language of earthly metaphor irony simile and narrative all paced like a good mystery."Bloomsbury Review University of Nebraska Press, Lincoln and London: 1999 paperback

EISELEY LOREN GRUCHOW PAUL INTRODUCTION
The Invisible Pyramid
University of Nebraska Press Lincoln and London: 1998. Softcover. Brand new book. In 1910 young Loren Eiseley watched the passage of Halley's Comet with his father. The boy who became a famous naturalist was never again to see the spectacle except in his imagination. That childhood event contributed to the profound sense of time and space that marks The Invisible Pyramid. This collection of essays first published shortly after Americans landed on the moon explores inner and outer space the vastness of the cosmos and the limits of what can be known. Bringing poetic insight to scientific discipline Eiseley makes connections between civilizations past and present multiple universes humankind and nature. Loren Eiseley's many works include The Night Country Bison Books 1997. Introducing The Invisible Pyramid is Paul Gruchow a professor of English at Concordia College and the author of Boundary Waters: The Grace of the Wild. "There can be no question that Loren Eiseley maintains a place of eminence among nature writers. His extended explorations of human life and mind set against the backdrop of our own and other universes are like those to be found in every book of nature writing currently available. . . .We now routinely expect our nature writers to leap across the chasm between science natural history and poetry with grace and ease. Eiseley made the leap at a time when science was science and literature was well literature. . . . His writing delivered science to nonscientists in the lyrical language of earthly metaphor irony simile and narrative all paced like a good mystery."The Bloomsbury Review "A relentless haunting and haunted figure devils the man Eiseley and twists from him some of the best prose we have. . . . The beauty of The Invisible Pyramid is that it communicates the awesome spectacle of our environmental crisis without a single shrill note. . . . Eiseley is a master of significant anecdote. There is an unstated but real gothic terror prowling behind his vision."New York Times Book Review University of Nebraska Press, Lincoln and London: 1998 paperback

"Is the existence of predators critical to our own and do we need to be doing more to assure their health and the health of the landscapes they need to thrive Eisenberg argues compellingly for the necessity of top predators in large undisturbed landscapes and how a continent-long corridor - a 'carnivore way' - provides the room they need to roam and the connected landscapes that allow them to disperse. She follows the footsteps of six large carnivors - wolves grizzly bears lynx jaguars wolverines and cougars - on a 7500-mile wildlife corridor from Alaska to Mexico along the Rocky Mountains. Backed by robust science she shows how their well-being is a critical factor in sustaining healthy landscapes and how it is possible for humans and large carnivores to coexist peacefully and even to thrive. .
