Es zeigt ferner, wie solche Priesterherrschaft für manche Völker zum Verhängnis wurde, indem sie deren Stillstand, oft sogar deren Untergang herbeiführte. Weiterhin legt es dar, wie die grenzenlose Habgier und Herrschsucht solcher Priester, ja ihre Streitereien über allerlei Glaubensfragen oft grauenhafte Kriege verursachten, die Millionen Menschenleben vernichteten und unbeschreibliches Elend zur Folge hatten. Man denke nur an die vielen Religionskriege des Orients, an die von der katholischen Kirche geführten Vernichtungskämpfe gegen die Arianer, Waldenser, Albigenser, Stedinger und Hugenotten, an die über zwei Jahrhunderte sich hinziehenden Kreuzzüge, an die Hussitenkriege, und an den von 1618 bis 1648 währenden Dreißigjährigen Krieg, der ganz Europa erschütterte und das vordem so blühende Deutsche Reich nahezu in eine Wüste verwandelte! - Katastrophen ähnlicher Art sind heute keineswegs ausgeschlossen, sind doch die Ansprüche und Forderungen der Priester in vielen Ländern nicht nur die gleichen, sondern sie gehen noch weiter als vor Tausenden von Jahren und während des finstersten Mittelalters. Noch heute kommt es wegen religiöser Fragen, wegen der angestrebten Vorherrschaft des Priestertums oder gewisser Glaubensgenossenschaften in vielen Ländern zu erbitterten Streitereien und grauenhaften Mordtaten. Noch heute liest man von blutigen Kämpfen zwischen den Mohammedanern und Brahmanen Indiens, von religiösen Wirren in den Ländern Europas wie in den Republiken Mittel- und Südamerikas. In den Vereinigten Staaten besteht begründeter Anlaß zu der Befürchtung, daß es daselbst infolge der gewaltigen Ausbreitung des Katholizismus und seiner stetig zunehmenden Einmischung in die innere Verwaltung und Politik in absehbarer Zeit zu einem abermaligen Bürgerkrieg kommen werde, dessen Tragweite und Ausgang niemand ermessen kann. Daß Zustände der gleichen Art auch die Wiedergenesung Europas aufhalten, dürfte jedermann klar sein, der mit offenen Augen die dortige Lage zu überschauen vermag. Das im Februar dieses Jahres zwischen dem Vatikan und dem italienischen Diktator Mussolini geschlossene Konkordat ist nicht, wie Papst Pius XL glaubte betonen zumüssen: "ein Schritt zum Weltfrieden", sondern eine Handlung, welche sämtliche nicht der Botmäßigkeit des Papstes unterworfene christliche Glaubensgemeinschaften auf das äußerste beunruhigt und sie zwingt, ihr Rüstzeug anzulegen und eine Abwehrstellung einzunehmen. Auf solche bereits bestehende oder im Anzug befindliche Gefahren aufmerksam zu machen, ihnen durch diese Hinweise womöglich vorzubeugen, ist der Hauptzweck dieses Buches. Und es ist der tiefinnigste Wunsch seines Verfassers, daß es diesen Zweck erfülle und die Menschheit von abermaligen Glaubenskriegen verschont bleiben möge. - Das Buch stellt sich ferner die Aufgabe, die Menschheit von dem seit Urzeiten auf ihr lastenden Wahnglauben an böse Geister und Teufel, an Unterwelten, Fegfeuer, Höllen und ähnliche Schreckensorte zu befreien, die von Priestern längst versunkener Zeiten lediglich ersonnen wurden, um ihre Mitmenschen in ewiger Furcht und Unterwürfigkeit zu halten. BLEESER Florenz‎ ‎Three large albumen paper photographs captioned in ink on the verso of each mount 'Palmerston Port Darwin NT destroyed by Tornado December 1896'‎ ‎Each approximately 150 � 200 mm on the original cardboard mounts 240 � 300 mm. The mounts are a little marked and chipped one print is a little weak on contrast but overall the condition is very good. Further specific details are pencilled onto the verso of each mount namely 'P.R. Allen's Store' 'Rundle's Store' and 'Bennett Street'. Interestingly the well-exposed interior of Allen's store shows another photographer at work. The initials 'FEB' are on the verso of each mount; not unnaturally we thought this was the photographer until we discovered his initials are FAKB. Florenz August Karl Bleeser 1871-1942 was born in Woodside South Australia. He became an assistant postmaster in Darwin where he lived from 1889 until his death. September 1847 in Gerlingen bei Olpe (Sauerland); ? 31. August 1909 in Paderborn) war Bischof von Paderborn. Wilhelm Schneider machte sein Abitur am traditionsreichen Gymnasium Theodorianum in Paderborn. Anschließend studierte er Philosophie und Theologie an der Theologischen Akademie in Paderborn. Am 28. Juli 1872 empfing er in Paderborn die Priesterweihe und war zunächst als Seelsorger tätig. Dann studierte er weiter, promovierte und wurde 1898 Professor für Moraltheologie und Leiter des Theologenkonvikts, des heutigen Collegium Leoninum. Ab 1892 war er Mitglied des Paderborner Domkapitels, 1893 wurde er Dompropst. 1900 wurde er von Papst Leo XIII. zum Bischof von Paderborn ernannt, später auch zum Apostolischen Vikar von Anhalt, heute Bistum Magdeburg. Die Bischofsweihe spendete ihm am 15. August 1900 der Kölner Erzbischof Hubert Theophil Simar. Kokonsekratoren waren der Trierer Bischof Michael Felix Korum und der Bischof von Münster Hermann Jakob Dingelstad. Er war ab 1866 Mitglied der katholischen Studentenverbindung KDStV Ripuaria Bonn und später Ehrenmitglied der VKDSt Saxonia Münster im CV. Schneider beschäftigte sich mit esoterischen und ethnischen Themen, die in der Gedankenwelt der Kolonialzeit zu Hause waren und entsprechend gefärbte Züge aufwiesen.
