The second edition of this significant piece of scientific history regarding evolutionary theory in the context of humans by eminent Victorian naturalist Charles Darwin. A superior copy of this important work. This work is regarded as Darwin's most important after 'The Origin of Species'. It continues on the principles laid out in the aforementioned work which served as an abstract of his theory. Here Darwin applies his evolutionary theory to humans and proceeds to detail his theory of sexual selection. He also discusses evolutionary psychology evolutionary ethics race sexes and how evolutionary theory is relevant to society. Being the first edition in single volume form this second edition was published three years after the first edition which appeared as two volumes. This edition had been heavily revised with nearly 100 textual revisions. It forms of three parts instead of the two parts found in the first edition. In this edition sexual selection in relation to man is its own individual part. This section contains a seven page essay by T Huxley on the brains of man and apes. With the five line errata slip. To the preface Darwin regards the 'fiery ordeal through which this book has passed'. Before this work Darwin had avoided providing people with an outcome of his theory of evolution in relation to the human race. This work gave the people an explanation of this and the first edition was the first appearance of the word 'evolution' in Darwin's works. A very smart copy of this work which forms a crucial part of scientific history as we know it. Condition: In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally very smart with just some minor shelfwear to to the joints and to the head and tail of spine. Small mark to the front board.
