This work by the Scottish geologist and president of the Royal Society Sir Archibald Geikie 1835-1924 is the full text of "The Rede Lecture. Given at the Darwin Centennial Commemoration on 24 June 1909.". The first 64 pages contain the actual lecture; the following pages contain 59 notes in smaller printing. The importance of Darwin as a geologist is overshadowed by his contributions to evolution but Geikie shows that Darwin was one of the greatest British geologists too. Geikie and Darwin were friends. Excerpts of letters by Darwin were used by Geikie in his "Prehistoric Europe a geological sketch" 1881 see Freeman. Slight foxing to the endpapers otherwise a near mint copy. Freeman 1351. hardcover

It was published both as part of a series and separately hence the presence of two different titles. The wrappers contain more information on Darwiniana including portraits sold by Ernst G�nther. the plate is a map of the surrounding of Darwin's house and garden with the track of a male bumble-bee as observed by Darwin. This edition includes a list of papers with their source and an index. The German biologist Ernst Krause 1839-1903 was "also known under the pen-name Carus Sterne. .Initially a student of pharmacy he later studied natural sciences at the University of Berlin. After graduation he devoted himself to independent scientific research. He was a prominent and successful champion of Darwinism in Germany." Wikipedia. Former private owner's stamp on first title verso and his name in an old hand in the top margin of the second title. Uncut edges a bit frayed otherwise a very good copy. Rare. Otherwise fine. 127 pp. � First Italian translation of Darwin's "On the movement and habits of climbing plants". The paper was first published in 1865 in the Journal of the Proceedings of the Linnean Society of London Freeman 833 later same year it was corrected and published in book form from which the present translation is made Freeman 1834 <br><br>Darwin described the origins and writing of this book in his autobiography: "In the autumn of 1864 I finished a long paper on Climbing Plants and sent it to the Linnean Society. The writing of this paper cost me four months: but I was so unwell when I received the proof-sheets that I was forced to leave them very badly and often obscurely expressed. The paper was little noticed but when in 1875 it was corrected and published as aseparate book it sold well. I was led to take up this subject by reading a short paper by Asa Gray published in 1858 on the movements of the tendrils of a Cucurbitacean plant. He sent me seeds and on raising some plants I was so much fascinated and perplexed by the revolving movements of the tendrils and stems which movements are really very simple though appearing at first very complex that I procured various other kinds of Climbing Plants and studied the whole subject. I was all the more attracted to it from not being at all satisfied with the explanation which Henslow gave us in his Lectures about Twining plants namely that they had a natural tendency to grow up in a spire. This explanation proved quite erroneous. Some of the adaptations displayed by climbing plants are as beautiful as those by Orchids for ensuring cross-fertilisation."<br><br>The first edition did not appear in America nor was it translated in Darwin's lifetime but has a recent facsimile. London The Zoological Society of London 1837. 8vo 22.7 x 13.9 cm. p. 49. Original blind blue wrappers preserved in a green clamshell box with gilt title. First note by Darwin on the group that made him famous: the so-called Darwin's finches of the Galapagos Archipelago. As noted in Charles Darwin: a companion "The importance of the fauna of the Galapagos islands especially of the ground finches now called Darwin's finches . to the development of Charles Darwin's early thought on evolution has often been stressed". This is Darwin's fifth publication in a serial between 1837 and 1886 another 160 were to follow - see Freeman. Published in the leading natural history periodical of the 19th century the Society's prestigious Proceedings volume 553 with a total of 172 vii 165 pp. As noted by Freeman there are four other papers by the famous ornithologist John Gould on Darwin's South American birds including many new species e.g. Rhea Darwinii but these are without direct comment by Darwin. Uncut partly unopened. Wrappers with some light spotting marginal fraying price written in pen to bottom of front wrapper a few short tears paper partly perished over the spine - otherwise a very good clean copy. Reply letter. Testimonial to Mr. Darwin. - Evolution in the Netherlands.
London Nature 1877. Folio 28.2 x 19.6 cm. pp. 410-412 in: Nature issue 15384 pp. cliii-clxiv 389-424. Original printed wrappers. On the occasion of Charles Darwin's 69th birthday the Dutch zoologist ornithologist and chairman of the Netherlands Zoological Society Adriaan Anthoni van Bemmelen 1830-1897 and the society�s secretary the entomologist Huibert Johannes Veth 1846-1917 sent Darwin an album with photographs of 217 Dutch admirers including 81 doctors and 21 university professors. Darwin replied: "I suppose that every worker at science occasionally feels depressed and doubts whether what he has published has been worth the labour which it has cost him; but for the remaining years of my life whenever I want cheering I will look at the portraits of my distinguished co-workers in the field of science and remember their generous sympathy. When I die the album will be a most precious bequest to my children.". Currently the album is in Down House. Uncut as issued. Sexual selection in relation to monkeys.
London Nature 1876. Folio 28.2 x 19.6 cm. pp. 17-18 in: Nature issue 15366 pp. i-viii 1-20. Original printed wrappers. This paper by Darwin deals with the "brightly coloured hinder ends . of certain monkeys" of which Darwin wrote: "no case interested and perplexed me so much". Darwin continued by recording and interpreting observations made by the German zoologist Johann von Fischer 1850-1901 to whom he wrote a long letter. As noted by Freeman p. 204 this paper was reprinted in The Descent of Man 12th thousand 1877 Freeman 948 and later printings. Uncut as issued. London The Linnean Society 1882. 8vo 22.2 x 14.4 cm. 46 pp. 239-261; 262-284; three woodcut engravings. Original printed front wrapper to the issue containing the second paper. Among the very last papers written by Charles Darwin and read before his death on April 9th 1882 is one of two botanical and biochemical contributions published consecutively in the Journal of the Linnean Society - Botany volume XIX. Both deal with the effect of fertilisers upon plant growth. The first being read by his son Francis on the 16th of March and published on June 26th in Part 120. This was followed in the next issue Part 121 read by Francis Darwin already on the 6th of March but not published until August 28th. Some mild toning and spotting mainly in the blank margins otherwise very good complete. Freeman 1800-1801. unknown

London Macmillan 1877. Large 4to 28.0 x 19.6 cm. p. 339. Not bound - as published. A work communicated and commented upon by Charles Darwin. Contained in a single issue of Nature - not a bound volume - being number 408 of vol. 16 published on 23 August 1877. It deals with a discovery by Darwin's son Francis and the subsequent comments verbatim - from a letter to Darwin by the German botanist Ferdinand Julius Cohn 1828-1898. Cohn is regarded as "one of the fathers of bacteriology" Encyclopaedia Britannica. In the same issue on pp. 344-347 is a lengthy address by Charles Darwin's half-cousin the polymath Francis Galton 1822-1911 in his capacity of secretary of "Section D. Biology" of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. Weak vertical fold slight fraying to edges otherwise very good clean. Freeman 1778. unknown
