Darwin Charles
On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life.
London: John Murray 1859. First edition of "certainly the most important biological book ever written" Freeman one of 1250 copies. Octavo bound in contemporary full calf half-title one folding lithographed diagram without advertisements. In near fine condition with the text exceptionally clear. From the Darwin family estate Elston Hall Nottinghamshire. Elston Hall became the home of the Darwin family in 1680 when William Darwin of Cleatham in North Lincolnshire married Anne Waring the stepdaughter of George Lascelles of Elston. The estate remained in the family until it was sold shortly after the end of the Second World War. Its most famous resident was Erasmus Darwin Charles Darwin's grandfather. Erasmus was the founder of the Lunar Society of Birmingham whose members included Matthew Boulton and Benjamin Franklin. A very nice example with noted provenance. Darwin "revolutionized our methods of thinking and our outlook on the natural order of things. The recognition that constant change is the order of the universe had been finally established and a vast step forward in the uniformity of nature had been taken" PMM 344. "Without question a watershed work in the history of modern life sciences Darwin's Origin elaborated a proposition that species slowly evolve from common ancestors through the mechanism of natural selection. As he himself expected Darwin's theory became and continues to be in some circles the object of intense controversy" American Philosophical Society. "The five years of Darwin's voyage on the Beagle were the most important event in Darwin's intellectual life and in the history of biological science. Darwin sailed with no formal training. He returned a hard-headed man of science. The experiences of his five years in the Beagle how he dealt with them and what they led to built up into a process of epoch-making importance in the history of thought" PMM. John Murray unknown

'Descent of Man' is the work in which Darwin's theories of evolution by means of natural selection were realized. Before this book Darwin applied his thoughts to animals and plants but had not yet decided they also could be realized in Homo sapiens. In fact the world 'evolution' had not appeared in any Darwinian work prior to 'Descent of Man.' Many of Darwin's theories that were prevalent in 'Descent' have been misconstrued and misinterpreted – most notably that humans descended from apes. Darwin never said humans came from apes or monkeys. Darwin's actually said that "human ancestors if alive today would have to be classified among the Primates."</i> De Beer.</p><p><i>'Origin of Species' originally written in 1859 helped lay the foundation for many of the theories of evolution that would shape thinking for the next century. According to Glick</i></p><p>"'Origin of Species' greatest impact on German biological practice lay in the introduction of historical modes of explanation for the observable phenomena of living nature. The historical approach to nature was rejected not only by the opponents of evolution but also by the idealist evolutionist. Whether they favored a teleological or a reductionist biology the idealists could not see the point of a theory that emphasized the irregularities and exceptions in the organic world. In the timeless real of idealist thinking unchanging laws worked out an inevitable destiny. But Darwin taught his followers to look at living beings one by one. Thus prompted they recognized as if for the first time the surprising fact of anomaly and the wisdom of an open-ended theory." Darwin Charles
On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection
Watts & Co 1950. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. Very unusual - the first exact reprint of the first edition: "When the first edition appeared in November 1859 Sir Charles Lyell protested at this speculation. Darwin replied "Will you send me one line to say whether I must strike out about the secondary whale it goes to my heart." In all later editions it was struck out. Note that apart from the many alterations in the manuscript of the passage must have been again heavily corrected in the proof since many differences appear in the first edition page 158 of the present reprint." The boards are shelf rubbed and edge worn but remain square and sturdy. Internally there is a previous owner's signature under the front board along with light tanning and sporadic foxing throughout. There are no other markings or inscriptions and the pages within are crisp and complete. The binding is secure. JK. Our orders are shipped using tracked courier delivery services.
