Amazon attributes this edition to Appleton and perhaps one exists but the publisher of this copy of the second edition is Thomas Y. Crowell. Appleton published the first American edition. This book is in good shape for its age with light fading to the spine but sound boards and binding. There is a little fraying to the top of the spine quite mild. There are no markings or inscriptions. The title page has a short tear at the top. The tissue guard of the frontispiece a portrait of the author is in excellent shape a rarity. The pages are toned but neither brittle nor foxed. There are many wonderful illustrations. Altogether a nice collectible for the Darwin fan.
