Interessante e divulgativa esposizione sulla teoria dell'evoluzione, la lotta per l'esistenza e l'ereditarietà dei caratteri attraverso l'elezione sessuale e le leggi della variazione sino a giungere alla razza umana. Due capitoli finali sulle prove di fatto dell'origine animale della razza umana. Rare fioriture della carta, lievi mende d'uso alla legatura. In buono stato, di grande interesse ed ormai scarsamente reperibile.

Nato in Val di Non e laureato a Vienna, Canestrini fu il primo traduttore italiano di Darwin (la sua traduzione di On the Origin of Species è del 1864) ed il primo ad introdurre in Italia le teorie evoluzionistiche. Fu professore di Storia naturale alle Università di Modena e Reggio Emilia e dal 1869 professore di Zoologia, Anatomia comparata e Fisiologia a Padova.

Edizione originale di questa importante opera del celebre biologo, naturalista e aracnologo italiano, Giovanni Canestrini (Revò di Trento, 26 dicembre 1835 Padova, 14 febbraio 1900) che fu tra i massimi divulgatori del pensiero darwiniano in Italia. Nella presente opera l'autore condensa i principi del pensiero darwiniano in modo da renderli comprensibili al grande pubblico, insistendo a più riprese sull'origine animale dell'uomo. L'opera contribuì in modo decisivo alla divulgazione delle teorie evoluzionistiche ancor di più che la traduzione stessa dell'Origine delle specie di Darwin -- Dorso incollato, piccoli timbri di libreria al piatto e al frontespizio, una firma all'occhietto, peraltro esemplare in più che buono stato di conservazione.
