Only 500 copies were printed making this Freeman believes "probably the smallest issue of any John Murray Darwin" title. Darwin described the origins and writing of this book in his autobiography where he noted: "Some of the adaptations displayed by climbing plants are as beautiful as those by Orchids for ensuring cross-fertilisation."
