Publisher's original green cloth with gilt titles to the spine. 8vo. xxii 458pp. Folding diagram. Brown coated endpapers. A very good copy the binding square and firm with some rubbing and fraying to the spine tips and corners. The contents are entirely complete without loose or torn pages and the hinges sound. Other than a little spotting to the prelims and diagram the pages remain clean throughout. Sixth edition fourth issue marked "thirteenth thousand" and dated 1873 on the title page. Darwin continually made revisions to his text. The sixth edition being the last lifetime edition features a new chapter chapter VII and a glossary by W. S. Dallas. Original blind-stamped green cloth binding; minor wear to corners and bottom of spine; Housed in full green Morocco Clamshell box.</p><p>Many signatures have unopened pages. Collation: xxi 458 pp. The fore edge of the table is dusted and partially frayed due to previous incorrect folding. There is minor spotting to the first and last two leaves. Glossary is by W.S Dallas. This is the third issue of the sixth edition which is the final definitive text for the <i>Origin </i>corrected by Darwin himself. According to Freeman the sixth edition is regarded as the last. "It is again extensively revised and contains a new chapter VII to refute St. George Mivart". Freeman p.79 Freeman also notes that this is the first edition where the word evolution is used and the title is changed to "The". This is the first issue in standard binding using the same stereos as used for the 1872 printing of the 6th edition and included the summary of difference and the historical sketch Freeman 407. </p> John Murray hardcover

London: John Murray 1872. The last lifetime edition Octavo. Original green ribbed-grain cloth gilt titles to spine frames and central vignette blocked in blind to covers brown coated endpapers. Folding diagram facing page 91. Bookseller's blind stamp to front free endpaper. Ownership inscription in ink to head of title page occasional pencil underlining marginalia and notes to rear free endpaper recto. Spine very gently rolled slight wear to extremities top edge dust toned minor rubbing to boards inner hinges cracked but holding foxing to prelims and endmatter; a very good copy. Sixth edition second issue printed simultaneously with the first issue which is marked as the "eleventh thousand" on the title page. Freeman notes that the second issue is "notably less common". The sixth edition is the last lifetime edition. Darwin continually made revisions to his text; this edition featuring a new chapter chapter VII and a glossary by W. S. Dallas. "The edition was aimed at a wider public and printed in smaller type. giving the general impression of a cheap edition which at 7s. 6d it was". It is also the first edition of The Origin of Species to feature the word "evolution"; the term was first used by Darwin in The Descent of Man published in 1871. This edition was subsequently reprinted unchanged from stereos in 1872 and again in 1873. The final issue is dated 1876; stereos of this issue were used for the very many issues which followed from 1878 to 1929 continuing to include the summary of differences and the historical sketch.
