The Origin of Species: By Means of Natural Selection or The Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life
Bantam Classic/Random House 2008. Softcover. New. 10 x 17 cm. The publication of Darwin’s The Origin of Species in 1859 marked a dramatic turning point in scientific thought. The volume had taken Darwin more than twenty years to publish in part because he envisioned the storm of controversy it was certain to unleash. Indeed selling out its first edition on its first day The Origin of Species revolutionized science philosophy and theology. Darwin’s reasoned documented arguments carefully advance his theory of natural selection and his assertion that species were not created all at once by a divine hand but started with a few simple forms that mutated and adapted over time. Whether commenting on his own poor health discussing his experiments to test instinct in bees or relating a conversation about a South American burrowing rodent Darwin’s monumental achievement is surprisingly personal and delightfully readable. Its profound ideas remain controversial even today making it the most influential book in the natural sciences ever written—an important work not just to its time but to the history of humankind. A classic that took the world by storm raising havoc among scientists and religious people as its exposition apparently contradicted the account of the creation of the world of Genesis in the bible Charles Darwin`s The Origin of Species remains the most readable and accessible of the great revolutionary works of scientific imagination. Sold out on the very first day of its publication in 1859 and often considered a watershed in the history of scientific philosophical and theological ideas the book describes the most fundamental truth of the natural world that there exists a "natural selection" of favourable variations and a fierce "struggle for existence" in all living beings thereby ensuring the survival of the fittest. The classic that unfolds the mystery of mysteries as Darwin calls it in an intimate informal and enjoyable style continues to transform our views of the world and remains relevant in any study of the history of ideas. Crop Diseases: IdentificationTreatment and Management
New India Publishing Agency 2011. Hardcover. New. Plant diseases are among the important factors that are responsible for causing yield loss in crop production. The loss due to diseases alone is estimated to be around 26 per cent. Diseases may attack at any stage of the standing crop from seedlings till maturity of the crop. They may affect different parts of the plants such as foliage stem root flowers or seed and cause various types of symptoms while the diseases such as wilt affect the entire plant. All these ultimately result in the reduction of yield and poor quality of the produce. Further many pathogens continue to attack the stored grains and stored produce and cause spoilage. To save the crops from diseases caused by pathogens and thereby to increase crop production it is imminent that diseases have to be controlled by any means. To adopt various strategies for the control of pathogens one should have some basic knowledge about the symptoms produced by the pathogens their life cycle mode of survival and spread and the stage at which the host is most vulnerable to attack by the pathogens. Most of the cultivated varieties of different crops are susceptible to one disease or another while some others are susceptible to many diseases. Even resistant cultivars of some of the crop species may become susceptible to some specific diseases in course of time as a result of development of new physiologic races of the pathogen by hybridization or natural mutation or when the environmental conditions are highly favorable for the pathogen and not quite favorable for the host. In this book the authors have given a detailed account of the major diseases of important field crops and horticultural crops and their management. The text is substantiated with many hand-drawn illustrations which are of excellent quality and in fact it is the highlight of the book.
