Darwin Charles
The Variation Of Animals And Plants Under Domestication
<p>London: John Murray 1868. First Edition second issue. leather_bound. Full tree calf gilt decorated borders marbled endpapers and edges. Very good. 2 Vols. 411 486 pages. 22 x 14 cm. 43 black and white illustrations. Comprehensive Index. Bound without the advertisements. The book's slow progress towards publication was due not only to its size but the author's ill health. "About half of the eight years that elapsed between its commencement and completion were spent on it. The book did not escape adverse criticism: it was said for instance that the public had been patiently waiting for Mr. Darwin's justificatives and that after eight years of expectation all they got was a mass of detail about pigeons rabbits and silkworms. The work contains the first appearance of the phrase 'survival of the fittest' in any of Darwin's works p. 6 of 1st volume. Single erratum in Volume I. FREEMAN 878. NORMAN. 597. Backstrip decorated with gilt florets and gilt lettered spine labels lacking Vol. II label.</p> John Murray

THE VARIATION OF ANIMALS AND PLANTS UNDER DOMESTICATION
London: John Murray 1899. 2 volumes. Second edition eighth impression a very early reissue of an important edition revised. With illustrations throughout. 8vo original polished green cloth gilt lettered and decorated on the spines paneled in blind on the covers. xiv 473 1; x 495 32 catalogue pp. A very handsome set beautifully preserved and unusually fresh in the original bright and unfaded cloth still with the gilt bright and strong in colour a tight and clean copy. A HANDSOME SET OF THIS HIGHLY IMPORTANT WORK. The second edition is very important in that Darwin made a number of corrections but more importantly he reworked Chapter XXVII on Pangenesis. This work "represents the only section of Darwin's big book on the origin of species which was printed in his lifetime and corresponds to its first two intended chapters. It contains in Chapter XXVII his provisional hypothesis of pangenesis; one which he thought was new but has a long back history" Freeman 877. <br> The first work to truly discuss the actual origin and development of species as an accepted scientific method.<br> The second part of his 'big book' was not published until 1875 under the title NATURAL SELECTION. It was in this work that Darwin attempted his finalization of the understanding or pangenesis and an explanation of acquired characteristics and hereditary resemblance. These subjects were near to impossible to explain in Darwin’s time as scientific methodology and technology had simply not developed to the point at which finite and provable studies on genes and chromosomes could be explored. THE VARIOUS CONTRIVANCES BY WHICH ORCHIDS ARE FERTILISED BY INSECTS.
London: John Murray 1899. Second edition revised sixth impression. With numerous illustrations. 8vo original green cloth lettered in gilt on spine and blocked in blind on the covers. xvi 300 Index 32 ads. pp. A very fine copy bright and clean and beautifully preserved. EARLY PRINTING IN VERY FINE CONDITION. One of Darwin's most important but often overlooked works. The LIFE AND LETTERS of Darwin III p. 274 quotes Asa Gray as saying that "if the Orchid-book with a few trifling omissions had appeared before the 'Origin' the author would have been canonised rather than anathematised by the natural theologians" and noted that a review in the 'Literary Churchman' found only one fault "that Mr. Darwin's expression of admiration at the contrivances in orchids is too indirect a way of saying 'O Lord how manifold are Thy works.'"<br> The book was concerned with working out in detail the relationships between sexual structures of orchids and the insects which fertilize them their evolution being attributed to natural selection and therefore was the first of the volumes of "supporting evidence" for his ORIGIN OF SPECIES. Although it was praised highly by botanists it did not sell well only about 6000 copies by the turn of the century. John Murray hardcover

Eliot. An esteemed academic Eliot had argued that the elements of a liberal education could be gained by spending 15 minutes a day reading from a collection of books that could fit on a five-foot shelf." <br> In 1831 Charles Darwin received an astounding invitation: to join the HMS Beagle as ship's naturalist for a trip around the world. For most of the next five years the Beagle surveyed the coast of South America leaving Darwin free to explore the continent and islands including the Galapagos. He filled dozens of notebooks with careful observations on animals plants and geology and collected thousands of specimens which he crated and sent home for further study. The Easton Press hardcover

DARWIN Charles
A Naturalist's Voyage. Journal of Researches into the Natural History and Geology of the Countries visited during the Voyage of HMS 'Beagle' round the World, under the Command of Captain Fitz Roy. With Portrait.
8vo., with a portrait frontispiece (original tissue guard present) and 6 illustrations in the text, neat signature on half-title; original dark green, rhea hunt blocked in gilt on upper board, gilt back, patterned endpapers, joints lightly rubbed corners very lightly bruised, lower hinge starting (but binding entirely sound), a little age-worn else a very good, clean copy. With 32p publisher's catalogue (dated January 1898 and partially unopened) bound in at end. Quite apart from its scientific value, Darwin's first published work (1839) is an important travel work in its own right. This is essentially a re-issue of Murray's 1890 edition (Freeman 28) with the postscript incorporated in the text, but preserving the gilt 'rhea' hunt on upper board and gilt '3/6' on backstrip first seen in the 1889 edition (Freeman 21). In addition Captain Fitzroy's name is reset as 'Fitz Roy' on title. Freeman (Darwin), 49.

The Movements and Habits of Climbing Plants. Third Thousand. [Second Edition]. FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM AND FINAL TEXT
8vo., Second Edition, Third Thousand, with 13 woodcuts in the text, small inoffensive label scars to front free endpaper; original green arches-style cloth, gilt back, chocolate endpapers, uncut, small skilful repair to bottom of backstrip, a remarkably well-preserved, bright, crisp copy. With 32pp publisher's catalogue (dated January 1882) bound in at end. The woodcut illustrations are by George Darwin, the author's son. The first printing of the first edition was in Vol. IX of the Journal of the Linnean Society of London (dated 1867 but issued in 1865). The second edition, the first in book form (greatly revised and enlarged) was published in 1875 with a second 'Thousand' (actually only 500 copies) in the following year. The present edition is the first to carry the author's appendix to the Preface, and a five-line list of errata on last leaf of Contents. Since these refer to author's errors rather than to literals and remain uncorrected through subsequent reprintings from stereos, this represents the final text of the work. SCARCE, ESPECIALLY IN THIS CONDITION. Freeman (Darwin), 222; Freeman (BNHB), 909.
