On the action of sea-water on the germination of seeds.
London The Linnean Society 1857. 8vo 22.1 x 14.1 cm. 11 pp. numbered 130-140. Contemporary ruled half calf over marbled boards. Edges speckled red. = A rarely seen contribution by Charles Darwin to studies of the germination of seeds and in particular the effect of their being immersed in or floating on seawater. That seeds may travel for considerable distances borne by ocean currents was a well-known fact; however Charles Darwin was the first to make a scientific inquiry into this phenomenon in particular how immersion in seawater affects the vitality of different seeds. Darwin noted that De Candolle posed this question earlier but that it remained unanswered. Published in Volume I No. 3 of the Society's Journal and Proceedings and followed by a short note on the same subject by James Salter F.L.S. On the Vitality of Seeds after prolonged Submersion in the Sea pp. 140-142. We offer the complete volume. Spine perished front board near detached. Disbound. = Among the very last papers written by Charles Darwin and read before his death on 9 April 1882 is one of two botanical and biochemical contributions published consecutively in the Journal of the Linnean Society - Botany Volume XIX. This is the complete volume except the general title with several other papers and 35 lithographed plates. Both Darwin papers deal with the effect of fertilisers upon plant growth. The first being read by his son Francis on the 16 March and published on 26 June in Part 120. This was followed in the next issue Part 121 read by Francis Darwin on the 6 March but not published until 28 August. It is a little-known fact that in Part 121 the last page of the previous part p. 261 is reprinted so to unite both papers. In Part 120 page 262 and the p. 261 footer remained blank whereas the second p. 261 has in the footer the text "Linn. Journ. -- Botany Vol. XIX" and the quire letter Z. In this copy both pages 261 are present. Some mild toning and spotting mainly in the blank margins otherwise very good complete. Freeman 1800-1801. unknown
