These volumes contain the first appearance of the word evolution and a verbal description of humanity's ancient ancestors which was no doubt distrubing to Victorian sensibilities. Darwin painted human ancestors as hairy tree dwellers. The majority of the book however focuses on sexual selection among other animal species. The first print run was very popular selling 5000 copies right away. A landmark work in biological science a paradigm shift in the way the animal kingdom's history was understood. Both volumes have been rebacked within the past 40 years with strips of the original spine cloth laid down later endpapers placed before and after the originals in each volume. A few leaves reattached and realigned to the gutters with archival tape. D. Appleton and Company hardcover

The first issue of ‘The Descent of Man’ had a print-run of just 2500 copies. It was published in February 1871 closely followed in March 1871 by the second issue printing of a further 2000 copies. There were two further issues of the two volume English edition in April and December 1871 the seventh and eighth thousands. Controversially received like ‘Origin of Species’ before it the word ‘evolution’ occurs here for the first time in any of Darwin’s works. It can be found on page 2 of the first volume. A good copy. Without the Errata slip mentioned by Freeman. 2nd edition tenth thousand. This edition was issued as a single volume the first edition 1871 is in two volumes and the text is divided into three parts rather than two in the first edition with sexual selection in relation to man being separated off as the third part. This edition has ben extensively revised and contains a note by T.H. Huxley 'On the Resemblences and Differences in the Structure and the Development of the Brain in Man and Apes' pp 199-206. First edition first issue of Darwin’s classic work in comparative anatomy his first inclusion of man in the general theory of natural selection and the first appearance of the term “evolution†in any of his works see Volume I page 2.<br /> <br /> In the twelve years since the publication of Origin the author had expanded his thinking as to man's inclusion with the other animals and this title which grew out of his Variations of Animals and Plants is based on his vast collection of data dating from 1837. Here by comparing the physiological and psychological aspects of man and ape he fills in what had been merely suggested in Origin that man's ancestor if still alive today would be classified among the primates and on a lower scale than the apes. The last chapter is an added essay on sexual selection that is the preferential chances of mating that some individuals of one sex have over their rivals. “Perhaps Darwin’s greatest contributions in this area was to show that secondary sexual characteristics had evolved in relation to a complex pattern of reproductive behavior which must itself be the product of natural selection†DSB III p. 575. Publishers original forest green cloth with spine lettered in gilt and with ornate gilt decorations at the top and bottom of the spine the front and rear cloth-covered boards have blind-stamped border decorations brown clay-coated endpapers 8vo. This is Freeman 966 which is the second revised and augmented edition the 23rd thousand. Darwin tackled the question of human evolution and natural selection in this work. It was a topic he avoided in previous works. There is a full-page annotation on the front free endpaper by John Macdonald dated April 1889 that criticizes Darwins writings in favor of the account presented in Genesis. No other ownership marks.
