Darwin, Charles
The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals
New York: D. Appleton and Company 1873. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. First US edition octavo size 396 pp. Charles Robert Darwin 1809-1882 was interested in the origins of life from a young age and when the "Beagle" had an opening for a naturalist his interest and reputation for "collecting observing & noting any thing worthy to be noted in Natural History" earned him the post on this voyage which would last for five years and which would become duly famous. It would become 'the key formative event in Darwin's life" and the many species he observed both living and extinct would foster "an intellectual ferment and fortify him to re-evaluate all of natural history" n.b. quote from the online Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.

This work "The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals" is "Charles Darwin's third major work of evolutionary theory following 'On the Origin of Species' 1859 and 'The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex' 1871. Initially intended as a chapter in Descent of Man Expression grew in length and was published separately in 1872. Darwin explores the biological aspects of emotional behaviour and the animal origins of human characteristics like smiling and frowning shrugging shoulders lifting eyebrows in surprise and baring teeth in an angry sneer" n.b. quote from Wiki. He "examined the causes physiological and psychological of all the fundamental emotions in man and animals. He concluded that 'the chief expressive actions exhibited by man and by the lower animals are now innate or inherited' and that most of the movements of expression must have been gradually acquired. This is the only book by Darwin illustrated with photographs" n.b. quote from the online History of Medicine and the Life Sciences.

___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full rust-coloured cloth over boards both boards with ruled borders and decorations in black the spine with gilt ruled borders and lettering light yellow coated endpapers with twenty-one in-text illustrations and seven Heliotype plates the plate facing p. 264 being a four-panel foldout fourteen pages of publisher's ads at the rear; octavo size 8" by 5 1/4" pagination: i-iii iv-viii 1 2-374 14-page publisher's catalogue at rear.

___CONDITION: Volume now near fine we had a professional name available upon request restore the joints head and tail of the spine; the boards clean straight corners without rubbing a strong square text block with solid hinges the interior is clean and the sole prior owner marking we see a short gift inscription in pencil on the front free endpaper "from name to Prof Lakoff"; some overall light toning to the paper the four-panel fold-out illustration with a shallow crease at the top right margin and the fold between the third and fourth panels apparently having been neatly mended with glue at some point.

___CITATION: Freeman no. 1143; Garrison & Morton no. 4975.

___POSTAGE: International customers please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.

___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Darwin, Charles
The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals
London: John Murray Albemarle Street 1873.

Early John Murray printing 1873 “Tenth Thousand†of Darwin’s The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals one of his most influential and innovative works following The Descent of Man. In this groundbreaking study Darwin argues for the evolutionary continuity of emotional expression between humans and animals proposing that facial expressions gestures and bodily reactions are inherited traits shaped by natural selection. The book presents his famous three principles of expression—serviceable associated habits antithesis and direct action of the nervous system.

Notably this work was among the first scientific books to incorporate photographic illustrations as evidentiary material. The heliotype plates of infants and patients including the well-known crying children plates were revolutionary for their time and reflect Darwin’s commitment to empirical documentation. Illustrated throughout with engravings by T. W. Wood and others including expressive studies of cats dogs birds and primates. A cornerstone text in evolutionary psychology behavioral science and the history of photography in scientific publishing.

Condition & Binding: Original publisher’s green cloth with gilt spine lettering and decorative tooling. Boards show moderate rubbing and light wear at extremities; corners lightly bumped. Spine gilt remains bright and legible. Cloth remains clean with minor surface scuffing. Hinges secure; binding firm. Interior clean overall with light scattered foxing and minor spotting primarily to preliminaries and some margins. Overall- very good. DARWIN, Charles
The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals.
London: John Murray 1872. Completing Darwin's evolutionary writings First edition first issue "written as a confutation of the idea that the facial muscles of expression in man were a special endowment" Freeman. The plates are among the earliest commercially reproduced photographs in a scientific book. While researching this work Darwin invited the photographer Oscar Rejlander to make comparative studies of laughter and crying obtained photographs of asylum inmates from the asylum director James Crichton-Browne and consulted the French physiologist Guillaume Duchenne on his electrical research on facial muscles. In the first issue "that" is spelled correctly on the first line of page 208. The plates are lettered with Roman numerals; another state is known in Arabic numerals without priority of issue. Freeman suggests that the Arabic numeral plates were printed first but notes that "the two states seem to occur at random in the two issues of the text and Darwin's own copy at Cambridge has the Roman" Freeman. Octavo. With 7 tissue-guarded heliotype plates of which 3 folding woodcut illustrations within text. With 4 pp. publisher's advertisements dated November 1872 at rear. Darwin, Charles
The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals.
London: John Murray 1872 First edition second issue with "htat" misprint on the first line of page 208. One of 7000 copies. Publisher's green cloth with decorative borders in blind to front and rear boards titles and decorations in gilt to spine green endpapers seven Heliotype Plates numbered in Arabic. Very good or better with light wear to spine hinges and corners a bit of toning to spine some spotting to the plates on pages 180 and 264 a few small notes in pencil to a couple pages and a touch of soiling to bottom edge of text block. Overall a solid copy of Darwin's "forgotten masterpiece" with very well-preserved plates. Freeman 1142. The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals expands on Darwin's theories raised in On the Origin of Species 1859 and The Descent of Man 1871 arguing that there is an evolutionary explanation for the human expression of emotions. The book was originally intended by Darwin to be a chapter in The Descent of Man but grew until it was necessary to publish the work separately. An influential text in the field of psychology the book has also been described as "a pivotal turning point in the history of book illustration right up there with Alice in Wonderland" The Atlantic. With seven plates of heliotypes that represent various human emotions The Expression of the Emotions was one of the first scientific books to include photographs. These photographs were provided by a handful of photographers and researchers including Guillaume-Benjamin Duchenne Adolph Kindermann George Charles Wallich James Crichton-Browne and Oscar Rejlander. Rejlander contributed nineteen of the thirty photographs in the book including the crying baby photo later dubbed "Ginx's baby" which became incredibly popular in its time. Interestingly Darwin's research for the book prompted him to circulate one of the first scientific questionnaires which he used to gauge people's ability to identify a handful of core emotions. .
