Very light age-toning strictly confined to the endpapers neat period ink name to the ffep else text-block remains quite bright clean and unmarked with sound binding. Overall very good. Dark green Murray cloth joints weak a little wear to the spine ends and to the top front edge contents clean and in very good order. FREEMAN #423 - This the Sixth edition is generally considered to be the final text though Darwin did make a number of minor changes in the 1876 edition. Freeman records that Chapter VII is entirely new and '. was inserted to confute the views of the Roman Catholic biologist St George Mivart. The edition was aimed at a wider public and printed in smaller type the volume shorter again and giving the general impression of a cheap edition which at 7s. 6d. it was. The title changes to The origin of species and a glossary compiled by W. S. Dallas appears. It is in this edition that the word 'evolution' occurs for the first time.' The Glossary in this the 33rd. thousand contains the misprint 'indigeens' for 'indigenes' and the opening sentence of the Historical Sketch reads - 'I will here a give a brief sketch.'. The bindings are firm as are the hinges and the pages are clean and free of foxing. These copies have book plates on the interior front covers from a prior owner's personal library as well as a small purple stamp of the same name. The lower end of each spine has the remnants of a small white sticker indicative of a private owner's attempts to catalog their own library. A handsome early edition of a seminal work of science. D. Sixth edition "forty-third thousand" overall - and the first to use the term "evolution" to describe the mechanism of natural selection that Darwin introduced in the book. "Evolution" - the word now most associated with THE ORIGIN OF SPECIES - was not used to describe natural selection in the publication until the sixth edition. By then Darwin was well aware that he had a phenomenon on his hands with the title - it was time to widen his audience. The 6th edition was purposefully set in smaller type slimming the book's profile and making it more affordable "I have been told on authority which I can trust that . workmen club together to buy the Origin" Darwin noted of previous editions in correspondence in 1871. It also contains a glossary for the first time making the text more accessible to a non-specialist audience. <br /> <br /> Appropriately this copy was once owned by James G. Mead whale biologist and longtime curator of marine mammals at the Smithsonian. Mead is a particular proponent of the anatomical study of marine mammals a method of examination that Darwin also favored; THE NEW YORK TIMES notes that Mead's use of this technique "has given scientists a detailed look at species that often can be observed only fleetingly in the wild." <br /> <br /> A notable edition of an iconic work. 7.5'' x 5''. But there are several scotch tape repairs to the title pages and first few pages of voloume two which also has sloppily opened 9cut in a few spots. bound in bright red newer full-grained red cloth with gilt spine titles and small gilt 3-lobe leaf decoration underneath the lettering. Thought to be an early scholar's preferred edition and scarce for this particular year and edition. Size: 8vos - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall . VG Minus. Rebound in Newer Full Cloth.
