Nel libro si pone l'accento sulla necessità che le comunità locali e gli individui sviluppino nuove forme di resilienza per far fronte alle criticità ambientali che si presenteranno nell'imminente futuro. Per contro non da soluzioni alla crisi in atto ma propone strade che, il singolo individuo e le comunità, dovrebbero percorrere per trovarsi preparati e far fronte agli sconvolgimenti che il clima ci porrà dinnanzi.

ril. Rossano Ercolini è un maestro elementare in un piccolo comune della Toscana, in provincia di Lucca. Quando viene a conoscenza dei piani per la costruzione di un inceneritore a pochi chilometri dalla sua scuola, per il bene del territorio e la salute dei suoi giovani alunni decide di intervenire. Fonda così l'associazione "Ambiente e Futuro", con l'obiettivo di informare la comunità dei rischi ambientali dell'incenerimento e di proporre strategie alternative per la gestione dei rifiuti. Seguono anni di battaglie durissime durante i quali Ercolini sfida apertamente gli apparati politici e i poteri economici locali e nazionali. Ma alla fine le sue ragioni hanno la meglio e nel 2007 il comune di Capannori è il primo in Italia a adottare la strategia Rifiuti Zero, diventando in poco tempo il centro di un movimento straordinariamente vitale che, da Napoli a Milano, coinvolge ora sempre più cittadini e tanti amministratori. Nell'aprile del 2013, per questo suo impegno come attivista e educatore, Rossano Ercolini riceve il Goldman Environmental Prize e viene invitato alla Casa Bianca dal presidente degli Stati Uniti Barack Obama. "Non bruciamo il futuro" è la testimonianza di una battaglia decennale vinta contro poteri fortissimi. È la dimostrazione chiara e diretta delle enormi possibilità di un modo di fare politica nuovo e capace di organizzarsi dal basso.

ril. Tutti noi abbiamo un'idea sbagliata dei rifiuti in Italia. Se pensiamo ai cassonetti incendiati, alle strade sommerse di sacchi, se pensiamo alla tragedia della Terra dei fuochi e delle discariche fuori legge sparse in tutto il Paese dovremmo disperarci. Ma in realtà noi italiani siamo migliori di quello che ci raccontiamo. Lo dimostra il movimento Rifiuti Zero, di cui Rossano Ercolini è il principale artefice in Italia. Grazie a uno sforzo «dal basso» di molte associazioni, nel nostro Paese sono già 276 i comuni virtuosi che hanno abbracciato questo stile di vita: vivere senza mandare tonnellate di rifiuti in inceneritori o in discarica, azzerando l'inquinamento che da essi deriva e non immettendo microplastiche nei mari. È possibile? La risposta è sì, e questo libro ci indica un modello in dieci passi: dalla corretta raccolta differenziata porta a porta, al compostaggio che trasforma in concime il nostro umido, dal riciclo dei materiali al dare una seconda vita a molti oggetti ed elettrodomestici, da una bolletta che premi con incentivi i cittadini virtuosi a una accorta politica degli imballaggi che li riduca all'origine oli renda compostabili. Questa rivoluzione silenziosa è già in atto. Va verso un nuovo mondo pulito, e dipende da una nuova collaborazione responsabile e lungimirante fra cittadini, istituzioni e produttori. Perché mai come nel caso dei rifiuti, si può dire che il futuro del mondo è nelle nostre mani.
