Altrettanto singolare può sembrare l'accostamento tra l'ecologia (scienza appartenete alla biologia) con il paesaggio (entità non ben definita, ma che per tradizione attiene ai fenomeni estetici, percettivi, formali..). In realtà nell'ambito tecnico non italiano il termine «paesaggio» è termine ecologico e quindi prettamente scientifico; esso pertanto non ha nulla a che vedere con i significati che gli vengono attribuiti nel nostro paese. Il paesaggio, come termine tecnico dell'ecologia, è definibile come un sistema di ecosistemi, naturali e umani, nonché come il processo evolutivo della biosfera, nel quale si integrano gli eventi della natura e le azioni della cultura umana. Nella scala biologica dei livelli di aggregazione della materia vivente esso compare quindi ad un livello superiore, rispetto a quello dei singoli ecosistemi. L'Ecologia del paesaggio, a sua volta, è allora definibile come l'ecologia dei grandi complessi ecosistemici e quindi, nella sua dimensione globale e nella sua accezione più dilatata, come l'ecologia della totalità. La profonda differenza di significato del termine «paesaggio», nonché lo scarto temporale non certo trascurabile con cui la stessa ecologia classica si è diffusa in Italia, giustificano in parte il notevole ritardo con il quale questa disciplina giunge in Italia. Il libro è infatti la prima pubblicazione che introduce in Italia una scienza pressoché sconosciuta, nonostante la sua nascita risalga alla fine degli anni '30 in Germania, in seno a quel denso dibattito scientifico mitteleuropeo che poneva in quegli anni le basi definitive dell'ecologia classica e ne avviava lo sviluppo. La pubblicazione di questo libro può costituire un significativo evento soprattutto per le nostre discipline della pianificazione. L'Ecologia del paesaggio infatti assume un'importanza fondamentale nei processi conoscitivi, analitici, decisionali e, in genere, pianificativi. Il saggio, anche se limitato agli aspetti teorici, mostra chiaramente tale importanza. Non a caso gran parte della trattazione è dedicata all'applicazione della Ecologia del paesaggio alla pianificazione regionale. È infatti in seno al processo pianificativo che la sua importanza pratica si manifesta appieno, laddove l'ecologia classica può fornire solo apporti di limitata incidenza. Per le sue particolari caratteristiche l'Ecologia del paesaggio permette la difficile integrazione fra necessità economico-sociali e istanze ecologiche.
