1 1 blank 1 1 blank 447 pp.Rare first and only edition in French of an account of a journey to Madeira and Porto Santo by the British traveller and naturalist Thomas Edward Bowdich 1791-1824 edited and with appendices by his wife Sarah 1791-1856 an outstanding naturalist and traveller in her own right. In 1816-1818 Bowdich had travelled to the West-African Ashanti Kingdom as part of an expedition of the Royal African Company. The resulting publication met with little success in the United Kingdom but more so in France where Bowdich and his wife befriended Georges Cuvier 1769-1832 and worked on several publications about West Africa and natural history illustrated by Sarah. The success of these publications enabled the couple to embark upon a second African expedition in 1822. After a stay of several months in Madeira where they gathered all sorts of botanical geographical and geological material they travelled to Gambia. After taking astronomical observations at night Bowdich caught a cold developed a fever and died.Penniless and with the botanical specimens collected during the voyage lost in a storm Sarah Bowdich took it upon herself to edit and publish the gathered material. With the help of several friends including Cuvier and Alexander von Humboldt 1769-1859 she prepared Bowdich's notes on Madeira added illustrations drawn by herself the 7 plates of fishes foreshadowing her famous book Fresh-water fishes of Great Britain and prepared additional sections describing the African part of the journey and presenting translations of Arabic writing. "Most significantly however her original descriptions of new species and genera of fish birds and plants evaluated by Cuvier established her as the first woman known to have discovered whole new genera of plants" Beaver. The French translation also contained additional notes by her friends Cuvier and Von Humboldt.Binding worn at the extremities. Elles transcrivent les 25 premières leçons, données du 15 décembre 1829 au 20 mars 1830, concernant les sciences naturelles dans l'Antiquité égyptienne, grecque et romaine, au Haut Moyen Âge, dans l'Orient byzantin et arabe et dans l'Occident médiéval. Il s'agit d'un témoignage extrêmement précieux, qui complète les publications fragmentaires et fautives parues du vivant de Cuvier dans des journaux, ou après sa mort dans l'ouvrage édité par Magdeleine de Saint-Agy à partir de notes sténographiques (Histoire des sciences naturelles, depuis leur origine jusqu'à nos jours, chez tous les peuples connus. 5 vol. Paris, Fortin, 1841-1845). Nulle autre publication n'a vu le jour, pour deux raisons principales; d'une part, Cuvier n'avait pas souhaité en réaliser une lui-même; d'autre part, il ne s'était pas appliqué à rédiger ses cours avant de monter en chaire. Leur narration se déroulait pour l'essentiel de mémoire, d'après des notes rapidement esquissées, et leur vocation était, en quelque sorte, de n'exister que "dans la mémoire de ceux qui les ont entendus" (Sarah Lee, p. 226). Les leçons d'histoire des sciences naturelles furent données de mi-décembre 1829 à juillet 1830, puis à l'hiver et au printemps des années 1831 et 1832, à un rythme plus ou moins hebdomadaire (Wells Pietsch). Le célèbre naturaliste, réputé pour son excellence oratoire, les dispensa à l'âge de 60 ans, après avoir réintégré sa chaire au Collège de France. Il s'agissait de son "grand retour", après les épisodes de l'amère controverse contre Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire et le deuil douloureux de sa fille Clémentine : étudiants, grand public et journalistes furent nombreux à assister à ces conférences scientifiques, qui se déroulaient le soir. Leur succès immense devait beaucoup à la personnalité, à la réputation et à l'éloquence du professeur, comme l'ont rapporté les témoins de son temps. Parmi eux, l'ichtyologue et biographe de Cuvier, Sarah Lee (1791-1856), qui décrit un auditoire captivé par "sa voix flexible et sonore", "la bienveillance et le jeu animé de sa physionomie" (Sarah Lee, pp. 227-228). D'autres, des journalistes du Globe, du Temps et du Moniteur, firent des comptes-rendus que Cuvier réprouvait [le premier compte-rendu dans les feuilletons du Temps paraît dès le 16 décembre 1829]. Il mourut quelques jours après avoir donné son ultime cours et sans avoir pu achever son programme. Le contenu exact des conférences, telles que prononcées par Cuvier demeure ainsi flou. Leurs dates précises sont aussi objet de doute. Enfin, la publication de Magdeleine de Saint-Agy, personnage qui demeure lui-même mystérieux, est aussi sujette à caution, en raison de ses ajouts, assumés mais non signalés. L'étude des notes que nous présentons ici, relevées par un auditeur présent lors des leçons - peut-être un journaliste - devraient ainsi permettre de résoudre plusieurs questions sur le sujet, notamment celle des dates.
