In 8, cm 13 x 20,5, pp. (4) + 322 + (2). Mezza tela ottocentesca con pochi segni d'uso. Titoli oro al dorso. Edizione originale rara di questo studio, tra i primi a tentare di confutare le teorie di tipo biologico attestanti la differenza di razza e l'inferiorita' dei neri rispetto ai bianchi. Pesce, della cui formazione poco e' dato sapere, se non che sia stato un prete, prende in esame le teorie di Virey (Histoire naturelle du genre humain), quelle di J. F. Blumenbach (De generis humani varietate), quelle di Cristoph Meiners e gli indici dell'angolo facciale, introdotti da Petrus Camper, e le indagini cranioscopiche di Gall e di Daubenton. L'A. confuta molte di queste teorie attraverso il paragone con i rapporti tra peso del cervello e peso corporeo di esseri umani e animali. Inoltre analizza le condizioni esterne che possono limitare le capacita' nell'uomo. Importante documento che, nel pullulare delle teorie scientifiche sviluppatesi tra la fine del XVIII secolo e l'inizio del XIX, atte a giustificare schiavismo e razzismo, anticipa le analisi e le confutazioni piu' progressiste della modernita': '...per ben poi conoscere come mai il negro si trovi nello stato morale in cui lo vediamo, invece di starne a compassare l'angolo facciale, a tasteggiarne il cranio e a squadrarlo da capo... perche' non prender piuttosto a contemplare le di lui circostanze esterne, principalmente la posizione geografica...'. Questo saggio, in seguito totalmente dimenticato, ebbe nel decennio successivo, ampie citazioni in Italia, tra queste il Dizionario classico di medicina dell'Antonelli, che, alla voce 'Negro' (p. 406, T. 29) produce una lunga sintesi di questo testo.

Il naturalista svedese Linneo classificò i sistemi vitali in "Regno, Classe, Ordine, Genere, Specie nel '700. Alla cui classifica nell'800, furono aggiunti Phylum dopo Regno e Famiglia dopo Ordine che hanno fatto la moderna biologia sistematica.
