In 4° (24x18,3 cm): due tomi in un volume: (12), XII, 96, XXV, (1) pp. e 168 pp. Elegante legatura anni 30’ del XX° secolo in tutta tela foderata con carta a motivi floreali in rosso e verde e fascetta in pelle al dorso con titolo in oro. Esemplare ancora in barbe. Grande marca xilografica dello stampatore Felice Carlo Mosca sul front. del v. 1 con “Fenice tra le fiamme volta a sinistra verso il sole in cornice figurata con due putti, motto: Semper eadem” disegnata e incisa da Giovanna Pesche. Testatine, iniziali e finalini xilografici. Qualche insignificante macchiolina di foxing in poche pagine, dovute alla qualità della carta napoletana e ma nel complesso in buone-ottime condizioni di conservazione. Seconda edizione, ma prima stampata in Italia, di questa celebre opera del grande medico francese Phileppe Hecquet. L’autore studiò medicina a Parigi e a Remis dove ottenne il titolo di dottore. Dopo aver ottenuto il titolo iniziò a praticare l’arte medica diventando presto celebre ed avendo numerosi clienti fra la grande nobiltà francese ma affiancando anche, a questa attività, una profonda riflessione religiosa che lo portò a passare molto tempo a curare i malati indigenti. Fu anche rettore dell’Università di Parigi. Grande fisiologo e patologo, le sue opere sono considerate come classici nel loro campo. Cercò di dimostrare come le cause delle malattie non fossero da ricercare solo in meri processi fisico-chimici ma anche come l’aspetto psicologico del paziente potesse influenzare la nascita ed il decorso di patologie mediche. Le sue opere rientrano anche nella bibliografia vegetariana in quanto Hecquet fu un acceso sostenitore della dieta vegetariana che considerava molto più salutare e utile di quella a base di carne . Arrivò a teorizzare che il consumo di carne fosse assolutamente non naturale per l’uomo. Quest’opera contiene il punto di vista dell’autore relativo alla fisiologia umana (prima parte) e, nella seconda parte, la descrizione delle cause delle febbri intermittenti e di varie altre patologie, con indicazioni utili alla loro prevenzione, cura con vaire indicazioni dietetiche utili ad aiutare il corpo umano a combattere le malattie. Alla fine della prima parte è presente la celebre descrizione dell’epidemia di peste che colpì la costa meridionale francese della quale, Hecquet fu testimone diretto. Seconda edizione ancora in barbe ed in buone-ottime condizioni di conservazione.

Michel et Edouard Strohl, selon l'arrêté du 28 mars de la même année. Le recueil ouvre sur la thèse de Küss, qui remporta le concours et qui fut titulaire, à la suite de Lauth, de la chaire jusqu'à sa mort : KÜSS (Émile), Appréciation générale des progrès de la physiologie depuis Bichat. 57 pages. Envoi non signé de l'auteur à Mr Edouard Fromentel. Küss était médecin, un journaliste et un homme politique alsacien. Sa thèse lui valut le titre de "précurseur de la théorie cellulaire". Küss mourut d'une crise cardiaque en apprenant la cession de l'Alsace et de la Lorraine. A la suite : SCRIVE (G.), Appréciation des travaux les plus récents sur les fonctions du système nerveux. [4]-108 pages. Scrive fut professeur de chirurgie à l'Hôpital Militaire d'Instruction de Lille LEREBOULLET (Dominique Auguste), Des mouvements des liquides dans l'organisme humain. [2]-76 pages. Lereboullet (1804-1865) était médecin et zoologiste. Il obtint la chaire de zoologie et d'anatomie comparée à la faculté des sciences de Strasbourg, au départ de son maître, Georges Louis Duvernoy. MICHEL (Eugène). Des muscles et des os au point de vue de la mécanique animale. [2]-40 pages. Eugène Michel (1819-1883) fit ses études à Strasbourg puis à Paris. Bien que n'ayant pas remporté la chaire de physiologie de Strasbourg, son travail fut salué pour ses qualités remarquables. Il est l'auteur d'un important traité Du microscope, de ses applications à l'anatomie pathologique (1857). Il s'orienta finalement vers la chirurgie et la médecine opératoire. Original printed green wrappers 7.38 x 4.63 inches 1-2 2 3-16 pages. Growing out of a project of lectures begun by pioneering physician Harriot Hunt in the 1830s instituted in 1848 and incorporated in 1850 this organization sought "to promote among women a knowledge of the Human System of the Laws of Life and Health and of the means of preventing and relieving sickness and suffering." Despite substantial social pressure against the Institute the organization provided lectures and instruction in anatomy physiology and hygiene. Helen Lefkowitz Horowitz in Rereading Sex: Battles over Sexual Knowledge and Suppression in Nineteenth-Century America New York 2002 notes that such figures as Paulina Wright Davis early active in abortion circles and women's property rights had appeared before the Institute in the 1850s. Publication date from the first page of the front wrapper; inserted printed leaf mounted after the title page with the 1850 Act of Incorporation on the recto and the "List of Apparatus Belonging to the Institute" on the verso. The 21 educational items range from "Model of a Woman full size capable of dissection" to a wired and mounted female skeleton a prepared three-month fetus to a wax model of a hand with erysipelas and a phrenological bust. This 1857 version of the Constitution preceded by separately-published versions from 1849 and 1851--each located in a single copy only as with a couple of early related Institute publications. Large new areas of underwater physiology have been opened by recent studies and should be susceptible to further investigation. The possibility now exists of a breakthrough in one or more of these areas. There is reason to expect that it will not always be necessary to base predictions of potential diving depth and duration upon the physiological barriers which now restrict underwater activity. Constitution and By-Laws of the Ladies' Physiological Institute of Boston and Vicinity.
Boston: Printed by Edward Mudge & Son 1857. A later edition. A little soiling and wear; some fly-specking to the rear wrapper; a little browning from the publisher's glue mounting the inserted leaf; a very good copy. Original printed green wrappers 7.38 x 4.63 inches 1-2 2 3-16 pages. Growing out of a project of lectures begun by pioneering physician Harriot Hunt in the 1830s instituted in 1848 and incorporated in 1850 this organization sought "to promote among women a knowledge of the Human System of the Laws of Life and Health and of the means of preventing and relieving sickness and suffering." Despite substantial social pressure against the Institute the organization provided lectures and instruction in anatomy physiology and hygiene. Helen Lefkowitz Horowitz in Rereading Sex: Battles over Sexual Knowledge and Suppression in Nineteenth-Century America New York 2002 notes that such figures as Paulina Wright Davis early active in abortion circles and women's property rights had appeared before the Institute in the 1850s. Publication date from the first page of the front wrapper; inserted printed leaf mounted after the title page with the 1850 Act of Incorporation on the recto and the "List of Apparatus Belonging to the Institute" on the verso. The 21 educational items range from "Model of a Woman full size capable of dissection" to a wired and mounted female skeleton a prepared three-month fetus to a wax model of a hand with erysipelas and a phrenological bust. This 1857 version of the Constitution preceded by separately-published versions from 1849 and 1851--each located in a single copy only as with a couple of early related Institute publications.
