Georg Bondi, München, für die Genehmigung zum Nachdruck. -- (Auszug:) Johannes Müller hat seinem 1826 erschienenen Werke: "Zur vergleichenden Physiologie des Gesichtssinnes des Menschen und der Tiere" seine am 18. Oktober 1824 gehaltene Antritts- rede als Dozent an der Universität Bonn als Einleitung vor- angestellt. Dieses erste Kapitel seines Buches hat er: "Von dem Bedürfnis der Physiologie nach einer philosophischen Naturbetrachtung" betitelt. Es sind bald 120 Jahre verflossen, seitdem Müller seine auf- sehenerregende Rede gehalten hat, und doch ist die gleiche Rede geeignet, auch heute das gleiche Aufsehen zu erwecken. Denn in ihr stellt Deutschlands größter Biologe Forderungen an die Naturforscher auf, die längst vergessen, heute wieder lebendig zu werden beginnen. Die Bekanntschaft mit dieser großen Rede ist für die jüngere Forschergeneration von unschätzbarem Werte, weil sie der Biologie jene Wege neu eröffnet, die durch allzu billige Vor- urteile und Mißverständnisse völlig verschüttet worden sind. Jedoch ist es nicht damit getan, die Rede einfach abzudrucken, denn viele von Müller gebrauchte Ausdrücke haben im Lauf der Zeiten ihren Sinn verändert. Vor allen Dingen sind die Anforderungen an die philosophische Bildung des Publikums, die Müller stellen durfte, heutzutage nicht mehr erfüllbar. Botaniker Franz Unger (1800-1870) wurde 1835 Prof. der Botanik und Zoologie am Grazer Joanneum. 1850-69 war er als Nachfolger Stephan Endlichers Prof. der Pflanzenphysiologie an der Univ. Wien. Unger war Mitbegründer der Paläobotanik in Österreich. Er zeigte die Ähnlichkeit des pflanzlichen Protoplasmas mit den niederen Tieren auf, erkannte den geschlechtlichen Charakter der Spermatozoiden der Moose, zeichnete die ersten Blütendiagramme und erklärte die genetische Verwandtschaft europäischer und amerikanischer Pflanzenarten mit der versunkenen Landbrücke Atlantis. 1833 wurde Unger in die Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina aufgenommen.
