Bischoff (1807-1882) war Professor für Anatomie und Physiologie zunachst in Heidelberg, später in Giessen, wo er ein neues anatomisches und ein physiologisches Institut gründete und "mit Justus Liebig, mit dem ihn eine innige Freundschaft verband, viel zum Aufblühen der Hochschule bei(trug). 1854 wurde er an die anatomische Anstalt nach München berufen, wo er bis 1878 eine grosse fruchtbringende Thätigkeit entfaltete, und dann wegen zunehmender Kränklichkeit mit allen äusseren Ehren in den Ruhestand trat" (Hirsch-Hübotter). - "Darwins Abstammungstheorie faßte B. als "eine historische, nicht exakte Wissenschaftslehre" auf. Während allenthalben den Ähnlichkeiten zwischen Menschen und Affen nachgeforscht wurde, hob er in Abhandlungen über die Anatomie der Anthropoiden (1867?1881) die unüberbrückbaren Unterschiede hervor. Auch die Darstellung der Großhirnwindungen beim Menschen und beim Affen (1868) sowie Untersuchungen über das menschliche Hirngewicht und seine psychischen Korrelationen (1880) drängten auf volle Objektivität. Durch genaue Vergleichung der Menschen- und Säugetierembryonen konnte er die Unhaltbarkeit von Haeckels "biogenetischem Grundgesetz" nachweisen (1876)" (F.
