La doctrine physiologique de Broussais s'est ainsi construite en opposition à la doctrine médicale idéologique fondée par Pinel, et marque un tournant méthodologique de la médecine au XIXe siècle. «"De l'irritation et de la folie" fut un livre à scandale. Broussais y reprend la thèse de Cabanis, accommodée à la sauce "physiologique" : le "moral" n'est que la résultante du "physique", le "moi", de la matière vivante. Die Lehre B.'s steht in innigem Zusammenhange auf der einen Seite mit dem Brownianismus, auf der anderen mit der durch Bichat, Corvisart, Laennec angeregten Bewegung. ‎Erste deutsche Ausgabe. - Engelmann 89; Hirsch I, 717 (Broussais) und II, 536/37 (Fleck); Callisen VI, 319 (Fleck). - Mit diesem Werk der in Frankreich von Broussais (1772-1838) begründeten physiologischen Medizin greift der Verfasser in den auch inzwischen in Deutschland tobenden Streit zwischen den 'Physiologen' und den hippokratischen Ärzten ein und versucht, sein auf dem Brownianismus beruhendes System am Beispiel über die gastrischen Entzündugen gegen seine Kritiker zu verteidigen. - Der Autor war seit 1831 Prof. der allgemeinen Pathologie an der Universität Paris. In seiner neuen Lehre definierte Broussais Krankheit als 'nichts als eine Modification des physiologischen Zustandes durch abnorme Reize und Mangel an Reizen' (Haeser II, 883), die anatomisch und physiologisch begründet werden mußten. Ursächlich war für ihn das Fieber mit gastro-intestinaler Reizung, das zu Entzündungen führe und für zahlreiche Krankheiten verantwortlich sei. In der Therapie vertrat er vehement die Verwendung von Blutegeln.‎
