Paul Lechevalier, Paris, 1962 In-4° reliure d'éditeur couverture verte plastifiée souple, 331 pp. Préfacé par jean Lépine, membre de l'Institut, Arpad Plesch nous livre ici le catalogue de 3500 espèces et variétés de plantes tropicales collectées et acclimatées dans sa propriété-laboratoire de Beaulieu-sur-Mer. Proche voisin de la Villa Les Cèdres à Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, Mr Marnier-Lapostolle, dans la même démarche, il se passionna toute sa vie pour la botanique. L'un comme l'autre ont contribué à la magnificence des jardins de la Côte d'Azur. Sa démarche première fut humanitaire, préoccupé par les problèmes de nutrition, il voulu tirer le meilleur parti des ressources végétales. Cet ouvrage renferme en outre 5 planches de dessins au trait, 6 planches de photographies en couleurs. Bon exemplaire en très bon état.

The author covers ferns, fern allies, mosses, lichens, mushrooms, fungi, seaweeds, etc, with nice colorful plates, most with several illustrations. "This handsome and elegantly illustrated volume is a good specimen of a class of works to which the popularization of science is mainly due". (Intellectual Observer). This first edition is in larger format than the later edition.

A picture of this book is available upon request b The hand colored plates in this first edition are much nicer than later editions, also, most later editions had fewer plates, making this first edition much more desirable. Freeman 3044. Massachusetts Horticultural Society p. 251 had only the 3rd edition. The author was a respected writer on natural history and botany subjects. 'This is one of the most interesting books that the botanist can wish for' (The World We Live In).
