Botany and Slavery
Botanical specimens. Copied from Nature And designed as simple illustrations of the twenty-four classes into which according to the Linnaean System of arrangement all plants are divided.
Liverpool George Smith 1827. Small square folio 22.2 x 18.1 cm. Engraved title i.e. front wrapper on blue paper mounted on thick paper; 24 engraved and finely hand-coloured plates on paper of various thicknesses; blue paper blank letterpress title page; 21 pp. second blue paper blank; rear wrapper mounted on thick paper. Turn of the 19th century iridescent silk boards; gilt title on the spine. All edges gilt. These fine illustrations were published with a double aim viz. educational: to instruct ladies how to paint flowers and philanthropic: "The first fifty pounds arising from the sale of the work will be given to the Ladies Society for Promoting the Early Education and Improvement of the Children of Negroes and of People of Color in the British West Indies." stated on the front wrapper. The philanthropical aspect is interesting: slavery in the British Empire was not abolished until seven years later in 1834. Slavery within the United Kingdom had already been abolished in 1772. Wrappers a bit soiled first plate mildly spotted; otherwise a very good complete copy. In 1828 it was reprinted but that edition is very rare too. OCLC reports one copy in Kew and three in American libraries and a few more of the 1828 edition. None in continental Europe or elsewhere. We have seen one other copy in much poorer condition. Freeman British Natural History Books 414 2nd 1828 edition only. Not in any major botanical bibliography. hardcover

BOTANY BAY BARERE DE VIEUZAC Bertrand
A Liberdade dos Mares ou o Governo Inglez Descoberto; Traduzido livremente do Hespanhol
Rio de Janeiro: Miranda & Carneiro 1833. Occasional light spotting. A fine copy. Three parts in one volume small octavo; in contemporary green quarter calf gilt. The first edition in Portuguese of this unrecorded reference to Botany Bay. First published in 1789 in Paris Barère de Vieuzac's La Liberté des Mers was an invective against the British government whose maritime supremacy he described in such terms as "despotism" and "tyranny". This volume is a translation from a Spanish edition of Barère published circa 1820. In the Introduction Barère charges the British with a multitude of crimes including responsibility for the evils of the French Revolution; conspiring with American Indians to attack non-British settlers; aiding and abetting pirates; and exiling Irish and Scottish political prisoners to Botany Bay. This reference consists of seven lines of text which appear on p. xv: '"Quem concebeo e executou o terrivel plano de desterrar para o arido Solo de Botany-Bay aos Irlandezes e Escocezes e de assassinar em Hollanda Italia França e America todos os Virtuaosos patriotas que sustentavão com energia a liberdade e gloria de seu paiz". O Gevenrno Britanico'. Barère 1755-1841 was born in Gascony and practiced law until elected to the States-General in 1789. Elected president of the Convention in December 1792 Barère presided over the trial and execution of Louis XVI. This is the first edition to have appeared in Portuguese. None of the editions in Spanish or French have been traced in Ferguson. Miranda & Carneiro unknown

BOTANY BAY WRAXALL Sir Nathaniel William
A Short Review of the Political State of Great-Britain.
London: J. Debrett 1787. Binding scuffed; scattered foxing yet very good. Octavo title 86 pp. in later nineteenth-century half black roan. A withering political satire containing one of the earliest printed treatments of Lord Sydney's plan to found a penal colony in New South Wales. This ironic and sometimes biting commentary on the political state of Britain by Sir Nathaniel Wraxall includes a savage attack of six pages on Lord Sydney and the First Fleet set for Botany Bay. Wraxall was a contemporary of Lord Sydney and the two men locked horns on a number of issues including the contentious scheme for a penal colony in New South Wales. This edition the sixth "with additions" as well as the seventh edition that followed shortly afterwards are the only two versions to contain the long passage on pages 77-83 which is in fact one of the earliest printed references to transportation to Botany Bay. Overall Wraxall is scathing in his opinion of sending felons to the 'extreme verge of Nature' and likens the scheme to the fabled land of Lilliput by Swift. Lord Sydney comes under heavy fire; indeed Wraxall condemns him as downright incompetent in handling the most basic issues. Regarding the departure of the First Fleet he writes 'was it not permitted to consult either reason or naval experience or humanity in the time chosen for their embarkation Must the month of February be selected from the twelve for the season of their departure Does Lord Sydney recollect the fatal issue of Anson's and of Pizarro's squadrons. If Lord Anson's experience and admonitions were insufficient: if Cook's more recent information were vain even Robinson Crusoe would have taught him better.'. BOTANY BAY GILLRAY James
Consequences of a Successfull French Invasion.
London: J. Gillray nd 1850. Engraving 370 x 270 mm. handcoloured as issued mounted. A famous satirical look at the decision of the English parliament to create a penal settlement at Botany Bay in contrast to the atmosphere of reform and concern with civil liberties in the newly created republic of France and in the American colonies. This cartoon was first published in 1798; it was reissued in the mid nineteenth century as offered here. James Gillray turns the tables on the politicians of the House of Commons responsible for the Botany Bay decision: French revolutionaries led by Napoleon storm the parliament gagging the Speaker and placing all the Members in chains and dressing them in the garb of convicts. All the symbols of House are destroyed: the mace is smashed the statutes discarded on the floor and below the Speaker's chair are the words "The House is adjourned to Botany Bay". This is the significantly later impression of the print first issued at the close of the eighteenth century circa 1798. J. Gillray, nd unknown

This is perhaps the most handsome and influential botanical of its day with its near-dreamlike depiction of plants suspended above cityscapes and other backgrounds. Munting 1626-1683 was a Dutch botanist and botanical artist the son of Henricus Munting 1583-1658. He studied under his father and at the universities of Franeker Utrecht and Leiden also spending two years in France where he obtained an M.D. degree in Angers. Returning to Groningen in 1651 he joined the staff at the Rijkshogeschool Groningen which eventually became the University of Groningen. Here he taught for 24 years as professor of botany and chemistry. On his father's death he assumed management of the Hortus Botanicus Groninganus from 1658 to 1683. His botanist friends sent him seeds from the Dutch East- and West Indies Africa and the Americas. His daughter Hester died after eating Deadly Nightshade from the Garden. Munting subsequently developed a particular interest in the medicinal uses of plants. The present work Munting's best known was first published in Dutch as Naauwkeurige Beschryving Der Aardgewassen 1696. Illustrated were trees shrubs flowers and grasses of temperate zones with some tropical and subtropical plants that had been introduced to the Netherlands. Nissen BBI 1429; Hunt 404.
