‎Reich und außergewöhnlich illustriertes pomologisches Großwerk der DDR, hier vollständig mit allen 219 Tafeln und dem 1968 nachgelegten Ergänzungsheft. – Inhalt: Monumentales Mappenwerk zu den in Deutschland (Ost und West) kultivierten Obstsorten, die erste umfängliche, wissenschaftliche Bestandsaufnahme seit der von Müller, Bißmann et al. herausgebrachten Publikation »Deutschlands Obstsorten« (1905-34). Das Werk beinhaltet mit Umriß- und Handzeichnungen bzw. Fotos illustrierte Beschreibungen von Baum, Frucht und morphologischen Merkmalen von 177 verschiedenen Sorten Äpfeln, Birnen, Kirschen, Pflaumen und Zwetschgen, Pfirsichen, Aprikosen, Beeren und Walnüssen. Der Schwerpunkt liegt bei Äpfeln und Birnen. – Illustration: Herausragend sind die von der Leipziger VEB Reprocolor satt und kontrastreich im 8- bis 10-Farbenoffset auf den beiliegenden 217 Tafeln wiedergegebenen Aquarelle der Pflanzenmalerin Anni Schalin (1900-77). Schalin, die an der Berliner Reimann-Schule Modezeichnen studiert hatte, wandte sich früh der wissenschaftlichen Malerei zu und zählte über Jahrzehnte und insbesondere in der DDR zu den gefragtesten Künstlerinnen dieses Genres. Die hohe Qualität Ihrer Pflanzenmalerei veranlasste die Zeitgenossen, sie mit Maria Sybilla Merian zu vergleichen. (Koronowski) – Das Werk »Deutsche Obstsorten« wurde in 10 Lieferungen von jeweils 12 bis 19 Sortenbeschreibungen und zugehörigen Tafeln ausgeliefert. Zu den losen Lieferungen von insgesamt 177 beidseitig bedruckten Halbbögen mit den Sortenbeschreibungen, denen die 217 Tafeln einlagen, bot der Verlag wie hier vorliegend entweder 10 jeweils verschiedenfärbige, von Hanna Weißbach typografisch gestaltete Mappen mit montierten Deckelillustrationen an, oder aber man konnte mittels eines der 10. und letzten Lieferung beiliegenden Bestellschein (vorhanden) 3 „Mappen mit Klemmrücken und Lederinbezug“ ordern. 1963 wurde das Mappenwerk dann in drei Bände gebunden neu aufgelegt, und von 1964-67 erschien zusätzlich eine aus 5 Teilen bestehende Folgeauflage in Metallheftern. 1968 publizierte man schließlich eine erste (und einzige) Ergänzungslieferung zum Originalwerk von 1956-60, die hier beiliegt und das Set damit vervollständigt. – Erhaltung: Erhaltung: Rücken von Mappe 9 teils mit Fehlstellen, dieselben mittels säurefreiem Klebeband konsolidiert. Die Mappen an den Ecken und Kanten stellenweise bestoßen und insgesamt mitunter berieben, teils mit leicht sichtbaren Lichträndern und kleinen Stockflecken; innen von sehr guter Erhaltung. – Literatur: Koronowski, Christa: Die freischaffende Malerin Anni Schalin. La ricerca di pepe e noce moscata ha dato impulso alle grandi scoperte geografiche e agli scambi culturali sulla via delle spezie, mentre il seme del cotone ha fatto germogliare la prima rivoluzione industriale. Il destino delle nazioni è dipeso, fin dai tempi dell'antica Roma, da una piantina originaria del Medio Oriente: il grano.
