An important work giving full collations, footnotes and bibliographical references. Records several thousand botanical works, well in excess of the 863 items in the Sotheby's sale catalogues.

This first edition is in larger format than the later edition.

Freeman 3044. Massachusetts Horticultural Society p. 251 had only the 3rd edition. The author was a respected writer on natural history and botany subjects. 'This is one of the most interesting books that the botanist can wish for' (The World We Live In).

Prima ediz. di questa importante opera di botanica, che venne impressa in quattro diversi formati: in-4, in-8 (tiratura riservata ai sottoscrittori. Il presente esempl. appartiene a qs. tiratura); ed in-folio, una tiratura limitata di 10 copie. Per i tre formati vennero usati i medesimi caratteri di stampa. Poiret scrisse i primi due volumi, mentre Turpin si dedicò al terzo, che ha come sottotitolo "Essai d'une iconographie élémentaire et philosophique des végétaux". Turpin fu uno dei migliori disegnatori di botanica del suo tempo e le 66 tav. (delle quali 64 a col.), furono tutte eseguite da lui. Fu notevolmente influenzato da Van Spaëndonck e Redouté. L'incontro con Poiret, avvenuto a S. Domingo, suscitò in Turpin un forte interesse verso la botanica e la storia naturale; insieme, collaborarono ad alcune tra le più importanti pubblicazioni di botanica dell'800, in particolare a quelle di Humboldt, Bompland e Kunth. Ottime condizioni, salvo minima gora al margine bianco superiore della prima trentina di pagine. Manca il Tomo II° (Jardin d'agrement), anche se ciascuno volume tratta argomento a se stante.

Pomologie Française.
4 vol. in-folio (mm. 427x302), bella leg. coeva m. marocchino verde e angoli, tit. oro e fregi al dorso. Illustrati da 423 splendide tavole, 420 in vivaci colori e 3 in bianco-nero. Splendida edizione del più bel libro di piante da frutto mai apparso. Quest'opera rappresenta il momento più alto dell'incisione a retino in Francia. Le 420 stupende tavole, rifinite a mano ed acquarellate da Poiteau e Turpin, apparvero per la prima volta nell'opera di Duhamel du Monceau ''Traité des arbres fruitiers'', pubblicata in 72 parti, dal 1807 al 1835. Dopo la morte di Turpin nel 1840, Poiteau divenne l'unico autore dell'opera e cancellò il nome di Turpin da quasi tutte le tavole, eccetto che da 10. Cambiò la distribuzione del testo e delle tavole, dando così all'opera un ordine più sistematico. Il primo volume è dedicato a: mandorle, pesche, albicocche e prugne; il secondo al: cedro, uva, ciliegie, fragole, lamponi: il terzo a: uva spina, ribes, pere (oltre 100 diverse qualità); il quarto a: mele, noccioline, fichi e avocado. La ''Pomologie Française'' fu pubblicata da Langlois, maestro dell'incisione a colori. Le tavole di questo capolavoro, furono realizzate da una squadra di 20 incisori.
